Average household prices for gas and electric

I've just been doing a well overdue price comparison on my gas and electric, and as I was working out what I pay now for the calculation on the websites, I was horrified at the total we spend!

So we're pretty careful, the house is effiecient, cavity walls, modern loft insulation, double glazing, decent boiler, energy saving stuff...etc..etc.
my last supplier gave me an electricity monitor, and I made a few very minor changes on the back of that too.
We have a gas boiler (condensor), and two gas fires, but everything else is electric, inc cooker and hob.
There's 4 of us in a medium size Semi - 2 kids and 2 adults.
I realise I took an average over the winter quarter, but I paid - £350 for gas and £232 for Electricity for the quarter.

Well over £2000 for the year. Is that normal? Seems such a lot, but tbh, I've not actually thought about that figure for years.

Whilst your winter bills might be large more than 50% of your annual usage is in the 3 coldest months of winter so you would not multiply that figure by 4 as you won't have the heating on in summer. You need to know your annual usage and the only way is to take regular meter readings to estimate it. Minor changes can then be seen by comparing to the same week or month as last year. You could enter your meter readings weekly on a site call Imeasure which will gauge whether you are using more or less than average. It's a bit techy though but once you understand it it's very useful. http://ebico.imeasure.org.uk

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
