Advice on gas connection please

I would welcome any advice regarding gas connection to a private property please.

I have just purchased a house with no gas but with a gas connection under the stairs (I don't think there has ever been gas used). On advice from British Gas I have had a Live or dead check from National Grid who said the connection was 'dead' had old pipework and needed a new service to the property.

I contacted British Gas who told me it would take 3 weeks for an estimate to be sent to me and 10-12 weeks for the work to be undertaken!

Is there anyway I can bypass the 3 month wait?? I have also contacted National Grid who can connect the gas from the road to the outside of the property I can also do the prep work for the gas pipe to reduce costs) but I would need to contact a gas supplier to connect the gas to the house and this would take 6-8 weeks .

I think I was naive but I thought the connection etc would be free and the whole job would be completed within a month!

Any advice please on reducing cost/speeding the job up please would be much appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

do not bother going to supplier to get this done as it is not them who do it as they do not own the pipes they will merely contact National Grid who from what you say own the pipes and would do the work.

may not be quicker but may save you some money as no doubt bg want a fee on top of ng costs for arranging it. There is a lot more involved to installing new connections than people realise from site surveys to someone actually having to check detailed map for location of other utilities, planning permission or license to dig on street and so on and this is all before a spade is lifted.
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.
