Cannot open CD-RW disc

I have an old CD-RW disc (74min/650MB) by 'Mr Data' which only has 5MB free, but I can't see what's on it. When I left-click on its icon in 'my computer' on XP, it just starts making 'printer' noises, reminiscent of a floppy disc drive. After about 10-15 minutes it stops, then nothing. Right-clicking on the icon does nothing except reveal the 'eject disc' option.
What could be the problem?

I suspect that the data is on the disc is corrupted and unreadable, and that the disc itself is what is known in the trade as a "coaster".The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.

Kernel I have no great faith in any remedy but you could try this: http://download.cnet.com/CD-Recovery-Toolbox-Free/3000-2352_4-10646814.html0
