Best priced or Free anti virus software

Hi guys,

A few days ago our Norton 2011 antivirus package expired and it needs to be renewed again, it would cost £39.99 to renew which considering i can buy 2012 in Currys for £22 i find extortionate.

Clearly i need to get something new as the laptop is now unsecure (i assume it is, or does it still have the old Norton covering it just not any new updates?) I have been happy with Norton, not had any problem but i don't expect too with the use it gets (emails and online banking and a bit of general surfing). What would people recommend i do as i'm not auto-renewing with them. Are there any good deals out there or any recommended free software i can download?

I concur: Microsoft Security Essentials solves every problem you've ever had with antivirus. It's super lightweight, easy to use, and will update and scan without you ever knowing it was there. Its interface is dead simple to use, so you can set up schedules and change your settings when you want, but you really don't need to do much. Set it up, forget it, and stay protected. It's amazing it took antivirus apps this long to get this simple.

At least give a link to the recommendation you used and you also missed the where it falls short section.

No AV is perfect but this is the best of the free ones....

Make sure that you d/l, install and run the Norton removal tool to get rid of all Mr Norton's hidden bits

Google for it.

If you want to, buy the disk from Currys and use its key number for renewing. No need to uninstall/reinstall. Find the 'renew' link in the existing program and then go to 'I have a key code to enter'. Put the disk's key number there and click 'Next'.

This does seem to be somewhat of a little money maker that a lot of the AV companies run.

If you do buy an AV rather than use a free one - then the online renewal is really pricey - based on convenience I suspect.

All you need to do is have a look at currys/pcworld/ or play etc buy the one you want install it and use the new key.

PCWorld/Argos currently have the A/V version for £20.00 for up to 3 PC's.

Avast or Avira are both good AV's and entirely free.
