JD Williams - Credit Account only

in Shop but don't drop

Is anyone else worried about online shops that you can only buy stuff from buy opening an account.

JD william group that includes JD Williams, Jacamo, SimplyBe and High and Mighty.

From the Jacamo TV Advert.

"Orders act as a request to open credit account, subject to status. Credit Searches will be made and recorded"

Shocking. You cannot just buy with cash / debit card at all - I checked it out further and they do a credit check even if you phone them / online to order a catalogue.

Isn't this indicative of everything that is screwing people and the country up in terms of finance?

Are there other companies that do this. Perhaps we should have a list?

Their terms an conditions do state that they WILL and DO perform credit checks. And when you try and set up a new account this is what happens.

However if you have a go at them on chat they apparently flick a switch on the system and voila - no more mention about credit checks at all - it's like they have 2 completely different systems and they try and get people who don't know what they are doing to sign up to the Credit account.

This is actually getting worse the more I look into it.

Don't the Littlewoods companies (isme, very etc) have a similar system?
    Or is it different?
  • I think it's incredible that companies can operate mainly on creating credit and problems for people rather than easily accepting cold hard cash.

I will never buy anything from a company that performs a credit check - certainly not like this.

As I understand it even credit checks affect your credit rating and the fact I may want to buy a few T-Shirts and a pair of shorts for cash may affect a future mortgage is stupid.

Personally I hope these type of companies fail miserably. This is the worst kind of shopping harking back to HP days of the 70's

But you are paying interest. And that is not the point they are sucking you in to a credit payment scheme.

no, you pay interests only if you don't pay in full. they give you enough time to pay in full when you get the statements, actually sometimes it doesn't show until the following month, handy for me if I'm a bit short that month and I need something urgently (but only because I pay in full, never had to pay a penny in interests).

Still not clever that they force people to have a credit check, I'm sure the loose a lot of sales (although they target the plus size market, where choice/competition is more limited). Nowadays many sites let you buy without even opening a simple account with them, just because the don't want to put people off buying.

I bought some stuff from JD Williams a year or so ago. I paid by card and then discovered via an Equifax alert that I had been signed up for credit. I sent a letter requesting that they delete the credit 'agreement' (!) immediately which they did. Haven't used them since.
