Tesco Card Best ?

On this weeks MSE email it covered the best credit card for fuel purchses.

I spend over £200 a month on fuel but think that the Tesco credit card would be better than those sugested. Tesco give you 125 points for £100 of fuel this equates to £5 in voucher deals with no annual fee. Am I missing something?

Maybe? Assuming we're talking about buying fuel at Tesco Petrol stations, the points given are:
Collect 1 point for every £1 spent in addition to 1 point for every £4 spent in each purchase (£4 min)

So £200/month would give about 250 points. Worth £2.50 in store, £5 on 2x deals, £7.50 on 3x deals, and £10 on 4x deals (although these are often on things you could have got a better price/offer on instead).

£200 spent at a non-tesco petrol station would earn you 50 points on the card.

Good point although it would be worth me using the Tesco station

In general I find Tesco is almost always at least 1p/litre more than other local fuel stations, so I prefer to pay less for my fuel rather than collecting points. I don't know if this is a general thing or due to location. If Tesco was the same or less, I'd probably use both my clubcard + CC.

I also struggle to find things to spend my Tesco points on. Last thing I found was the Hungry Horse vouchers, but they've expired now.

When I do fill up however, it goes on my AA card. Since I'm a member, I get 2% back from wherever I fill up. So on £200, I get 400 points, which is £4 in highstreet vouchers, £2 in plain old cashback, or various on 'rewards'. Apparently I can get a £10 refund on my membership via 500 points, so I plan to haggle as usually come renewal day and then put the renewal fee on the card and then claim the refund. Don't know if that'll work yet though (although I see no reason why not)
  • I was thinking of saving for a holiday cottages4u are on the deals at 4x voucher value.

I use 2 cards (in conjunction) for Tesco Fuel purchases:

Tesco CC gives 1 clubcard point per £1 + Santander 123 cc earns 3% cashback

So, as per your example: £100 of fuel would earn 100 clubcard points (worth up to £4) + £3 in 123 cashback = £7 total.

    The Tesco website:
    http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/clubcard/collecting.asp
Claims one earns 1 point for every £2 spent normally, but " 1 point for every £1 spent in addition to 1 point for every £4 spent in each purchase" for "Tesco Fuel paid for with a Tesco Clubcard Credit Card".

So, my first question is, are you sure? If you are, it's quite possible that you've discovered a loophole (in that using the clubcard portion only of the CC still gives the better point rate, even if you don't pay with the CC)! :)

Yes, 100% sure: 1 clubcard point for every £1 on fuel.
The only downside is that the Tesco cc doesn't have a barcode so payment is a two-stage sequence in the card reader.

Thanks for the heads up - so next time I find a cheap(ish) Tesco fuel station, I'll use both my Tesco CC and AA CC for fuel purchases :)

Yes I have just read that as well.

I am confused though and I have just emailed Tesco about this, as I can now see how my clubcard points are allocated and I am receiving the same amount of points on each transaction as I do when I buy petrol from elsewhere. I thought perhaps they might put the extra points on as a different transaction but I can not see it?

Anyone know how it works/should work?

I believed it worked in the way of "You get 1 point per £1 spend on your clubcard account, and then 1 point per £4 spend on your Tesco Bank Clubcard account (shown as CLUBCARD M.CARD SPEND)", as in, they come from 2 different sources.

I used my CC at a Tesco petrol station recently and just got the points without the M. CARD SPEND transaction as I paid with my AA card.
