cq71 screen issue

Hi night owl experts!

I have a presario cq71 win 7/64. Today the screen has gone awary.

Basically the black background shows as red, white as pale blue, the same in boot startup, in DOS, etc. Generally colours on screen are very washed out.

No issues with external display. Updated Intel Series 4 drivers. Tried changing resolution/display etc. Still the same.

Possibilities? (1) Screen cable? (2) inverter? (3) screen? (4) motherboard/graphics chip?

Whats your best suggestion? Thank you.

I'd say the screen has started to go. Unless you have taken a heavy knock, check the connections of the screen, but it is more than likely that the LCD has started to fail.

Looks like the screen. Good news is the screen is cheap. Bad news is its a pig to change because the hinge is in such a way that the bottom screws for the screen bezel end up covered by the main body of the laptop when you open the lid so you have to remove the keyboard and the power button strip to undo the hinges and remove the complete lid assembly to change it.

May i suggest before buying a new screen, that you check the screen cable, on the CQ71 its a tight fit around the left hinge, and can catch. As the previous poster says, you will need to remove the keyboard, and the plastic bezel that surrounds the board, to get at the hinges..

Thanks all. it was the screen cable - don't laugh, but HP quoted over £200 to replace - only asked them for the part!!; all official parts suppliers were unable to source (PCW where it came from, didn't want to know), one even said, quote " HP has not released parts for this model yet"; ebay was the only source for second hand cables. Seams very strange as the laptop is only 18 months oild.
