.......she was quite rude about it.

How can you prove 'rudeness'? What you call 'rude', someone else might call 'efficient' or 'assertive'.

Forget about complaining, unless you can point to specifics: "She called me the 'whatever-word'!" and have a witness to back you up.

    Think about this
If you report what you will get., I will say nothing. They might try to please you just to sound good. That is the complaint oficer have been trained for, but the officer who you have reported will not be sactioned or cautioned for sure ... ( as in fact s/he is doing something good for Santander)

You will get more by sneaking again once there is another free £100 next offer. and leave again once you get another free £100 ... ;)

You shouldnt close down a bank account. It shows as "settled" on your credit file. Its not bad, but it doesnt look nice when you apply for credit.

This is the first time I have heard this. Could someone who knows about this shed the light please?

I have seen few (if not a lot) of very knowledgeable people who contribute a lot in this forum do open-c;ose , open-close their account all the time. My understnding this is also the advise from MSE to get a good interest rate and to keep harvesting jaoining incentive.

There will be few good reasons why people need to close their inactive accounts once the incentive have been piad, ot once the interest start falling:

    - It does not look good either if you have too many inactive account which do nothing good for you .
    - Keep it open will diminishing your chance to get new good product offer as many times, the offer condition has clearly state, not the current account holder, the maximum number of accounts that you could have. The condition to qualify might include the old account that you keep it fresh. So better to close it and start with the new book if the new product come.
    - But the most imprtant issue here is that, many current accounts with cash back offer and/or respestable return/APR will require a certain monthly payment to avoid underfunding fee/charges. So in this case if you do not close it you might be risking yourself to pay for something you do not really need.

I myself have done it all the time and I still have no difficulties to get a new credit card with good " maximum spending limit"

But if many knowledgeable people confirm that it is a good idea to keep inactive ac open, I might be thinking of closing my current account in the future.

And the £1000 every month is that for the £100 account? You have to put in £1000 in every month?

Customers are charged £2 if they don't pay in £1,000, or more, from an external source in to their Santander Preferred during a particular month.

    Thanks everyone for the advice!
Its true that complaining won't make a difference to the member staff who served as i doubt anyone would say something to her. However, I might just write a quick letter of complaint to see if i can even get a small pay out in compensation but i am not going to put too much time into and get my hopes up high.

But thanks once again everyone :)
And hopefully Santander will have another £100 switch incentive sometime soon! :p
  • i called santander about my bank account the other day after my card was declined at my local tesco store even though my account was a few thousand pounds in credit.
firstly they insist you call the 0845 number this is expensive from a mobile and cannot be called from my inclusive talk time so i used skype on my mobile.
only after being cut off a few times i got to talk to this verry off hand woman who refused bluntly to talk to me because i was using skype
so i asked her to ring me on my mobile and she said no the only way that she would talk to me was if i rang the 0845 number and if i could not call it then tuff.
so i was stewing on this all night long then i called again in the morning (on skype) and got to speak to another woman
when i asked why my card was refused she said it has been blocked
so i asked why and she said it might be because ive used it in tesco
i told her ive been using it there for years then she said oh well i dont know, it might be because you paid your electric bill with it.
    Ehh
she then said i need to go in to a branch.
and after being off hand and rude i decided enough was enough so i went in to town and opened a new account with halifax and then i took all my money from Santander and closed my account. so Santander you can stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
