I too love to grow my own and I have things starting to come to life in the greenhouse. Note of warning keep an eye out for slugs in the greenhouse. I noticed that the heads of some of my marigolds had started to disappear and the silver trails indicated the dreaded slugs. I sprinkle a few slug pellets around, but be careful of pets. My dogs can't get in there.

Have a lovely relaxing day everyone.:D

What things do you grow??? I'm really new to this so happy for any tips! :D

    Update time for me!

Haven't updated in a wee while so thought I should! Am hoping to knock a little more off this month when my expenses come through and when I finally get my bum into gear to put stuff on fleabay, treegum, amazonia etc!

Really pleased with how much we have managed to pay off but we really still have so much to learn and change. We are a million times better than we were because of this amazing thread but need to crack down on the unnecessary spending. Gonna set myself a target of NSD's and see how we get on :) I don't post much but read every day and love hearing how brilliantly everybody is doing. Congratulations to everybody on their debt reduction so far!

Wow you are sooooo close to 30%!!! :j:j:j I agree that we are all on a steep learning curve but we will all get there by sharing our experiences and helping each other xxx

    Hello all,
First time posting here and hope I can join. I know 2012 is well under way but I would like to see where I can get to by Christmas in terms of tackling my debt.

I did a tally of my dribs and drabs of debts and havea shocking £19000 to sort out. 'Tis my Mount Everest.

I have been blindfolded by having little bits here and there and therefore fooled into thinking it wasn't so bad.

Paid off 200 today though and after reading a bit of MSE advise I started with the CC with the highest interest. Start as I mean to go on.

Thanks for the inspiration so far!

It may be April but have another 7-8months to go and some have joined this journey knowing it will take a little longer but we love having everyone on board to inspire each other xxx

I'm currently watching S1lent W1tness from last night and was shocked at the blase way the detective just said to the other one "He had a £9k overdraft"...."That's nothing these days" WHAT?!?!?! I don't think the British public need the Beeb to be telling them that £9k isn't anything to be too worried about, pfft! I think the majority of society have a lot to wake up to with this debt business, have we really been sold the idea that it's ok to buy things on credit for so long that it doesn't shock anymore? Although saying that C4sualty did make a good point last night that in these times we need to be eating more fresh fruit & veg and less processed or we'll get scurvy ick! Right rant over :)

Scurvy??? Isn't that what Pirates used to get??? :rotfl: What is it by the way? xxx

  • Hi Jemma,

I grow different vegs like potatoes, leeks, runner beans, dwarf beans, salad leaves, raddish, toms, peppers, chillis, cucumber, trying celery this yr for the first time. I have raspberry canes, strawberries, rhubbarb, apples, cherries. Lots of the fruit trees were new last yr but didnt do much so hoping for more success this yr lol. Given up on carrots, carrot fly paradise at mine no matter what I try. I just put it in and hope for the best. I garden organically as poss. Kerri my slug pellets said suitable for organic gardening.

I just love growing food to eat because it is cheap, delicious, no air miles and I don't spray with chemicals. Never get to cook peas as we always just pick them and eat from the pods:rotfl:. Don't think I am doing them this yr though as had a problem with mildew last few yrs so will have a yr off.

I am no expert but I have a few growing veg books, check out book people for cheap books. Or go to the library for free!

I also grow some bedding plants and last yr sold a few on my front. Not bad for a £1 for 6. This bought me my seeds for this yr, very MSE:T:T:T

If I put things out and the weather changes (North West) going cold I fleece the things I have planted out to save getting frost or wind damage. Last yr the cold wind froze the leaves on my runner beans (they did recover and had a bumper crop). I don't put things out too early, keeping them nice and warm in the greenhouse.

Did I mention that I'm going to start making and selling knickers? I found a lovely piece of lacy stretch material for £1.80 in F4bricland at the weekend, and some elastic for 15p/m I reckon that'll make two pairs for less than £2! :D

Ooooh I love that place!! This means that although I live in Newcastle these days I'm assuming you are not far from where my parents live and where I grew up??! Fabricl*nd only seem to have a few stores down south. I miss it! :) How is the knicker making going?

Ooh thanks Kerri, I'm actually really close to there (I'm North Tyneside really) but keep forgetting about it as I'm not used to being close to it yet IYSWIM. Will check it out tomorrow whilst OH is at work :Dl :D

Hiiiiii fallenwiccan I just noticed that you are a fellow Geordie (well I'm not actually a geordie at all but I'm trying) I haven't been very good at catching up with the thread recently so i'm just trying to catch up with everything, easier for me to reply to things individually atm. I will post with what i've been up to when I finish catching up. Sorry for spamming the page everyone :)

mumof3plusoh - Ewww icky slugs! Is there an eco-way of seeing them off? I'm trying to be an organic gardener, but still pretty new to all of this.

DD1981 - Congrats on being over a quarter of the way to debt freedom you're doing amazingly well :) I've found the best visual for NSDs is to write a blue star in marker on my calendar that's by my bedroom door, that way I can see how many NSDs I am racking up.
Superscrimpers said to use egg shells as they can't "walk" over them! I've watched the whole of series 1 this weekend since I saw you mention it in one of your posts and found it on 4od!

I'm not doing as well as I'd like on the NSD target as the supermarket was shut yesterday so I had to get my groceries today instead when I'd already spent on something else, knowing that yesterday was meant to be a non-NSD! Groceries have been my downfall lately, I've cut back on all other spending, but I've got to eat!

    Welcome to the gang!

Catsmort i find that eggshells work really well too so mumofthree, give them a go!

Jemma sorry I have been so slack on the totals front, I'm gonna chat to my landlady tomorrow to work out how much I have left to payy off my rent and take the rest of the totals from there. I have been paying extra off every month to ALL my debts but I just can't remember how much I will have reduced everything by...d'oh! and scurvy is caused by vitamin C deficiency (which is why sailors used to eat lots of limes and why we get called limeys) and I think its a horrible skin rash a bit like shingles..ewwwwwww!

So HAPPY to be back on the thread. Don't let me go awol again...lol I had a lovely holiday btw, I am on a massive comedown from it now, got the blues but there's no point in being down when I am blessed in so many ways so trying to brush it off until it goes away. :j

  • Hope everyone had a lovely weekend. I’ve been up in Scotland with the in-laws and only just got back. Their internet was broken so I unexpectedly had no access to anything. Had a lovely time but am now seriously behind on the OU assignments so really need to get into gear tomorrow. On the debt-busting front, I’ve decided I want to be in the top 10 on the debt free roll of honour! Should be theoretically possible, just need to be very tight which might be a bit hard as a new job will mean having to buy work clothes as I have nothing remotely suitable. My dieting has gone completely off the rails but it’s weigh-day tomorrow so I must get back on it, I feel disgusting and want to feel good for my big trip in May!

Well done to all who have paid off some more debt! :)

Fallenwiccan – hope OHs op goes well, I’ll say it now otherwise I’ll forget!
Kerri – did you do Ben Nevis in the end? I’ve got the dragon books (in paper form) somewhere, if i can find them you are welcome to borrow them?
Jakes-mum – hope you are feeling better? You seem to be getting everything at the moment :( I missed your post about medical redundancy. Sorry to hear that, I’m perfectly fit except my ears so am probably going to have to do the same. If you ever want a rant or chat then PM me anytime.
Jemma – just don’t want to confuse you or myself with my updates :) i always use the front page to work out my figures so i’ll get soooo confused if i’ve updated before you have!
