When can I get a graduate account?

I could do with the overdraft facility of a graduate account once I leave Uni. My last exam is on 29 May, but my graduation is only in Novemeber. Rang Natwest to ask if I could get onto the graduate account in may and they said no, ill have to wait until I actually graduate, which is a bit unfair......

Are they right?

  • Annoying, but arguably technically correct that Natwest require you have to have had the official ceremony, as that's when you get the official piece of paper! Just finishing exams is no guarantee for the bank that you have actually passed the exams.

An O/D once you graduate is less likely to be interest-free... would look on Natwest's website for rates and terms, and other banks' sites, to see who can offer you the best account that will suit you
  • I'm not sure about whether you would have to have a graduation ceremony or not but you should be able to obtain an interest free overdraft as a graduate, in fact possibly a larger overdraft than you have on a student account. RBS currently offers £2000 interest free O/D for the first year after graduation, with this interest free amount reducing by £500 per year. This is to assist you in repaying your overdraft amount over a 3 year period.
You can apply for this online.

Google "graduate accounts" the mse link to the info page is the first hit.
