I have a Panasonic DVD recorder with hard drive. Today it won't play discs, makes a funny noise when I put one in and then the display reads "no read". The problem I have is that the hard drive is working fine, but need to play discs. If i buy another Panasonic DVD player, can I still play the discs I have recorded on the Panasonic recorder...or do I need to buy another the same? Many Thanks

DVD recorders have a short life span. You need to make sure the new one can read either DVD+R or DVD-R (whichever you wrote onto).
Most new DVD players/recorders can read both.0 -
If the discs are ones you've 'made' yourself on the Panasonic but not done the 'make compatible' (finalise) step, I think you'll struggle to get them to be read by another make of recorder. I had this problem with my Panasonic when it died.
My Panasonic showed the same symptoms - unfortunately, looking on the 'net, the horrible grinding noise & 'no read' issue seems to be a common problem with Panasonic recorders.
I replaced it with a Toshiba - so far so good, but I agree, they all seem to have a limited life!0 -
Ditto - had the same problem. I also had a fair number of DVD RAMs (RIP
) so I ended up getting another Panasonic (Incidentally, I had tried other DVD-R's I had recorded on a Sony player butthey didn't play since they weren't finalised). Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0 -
If your dvd drive repeatedly makes "graunching" noises as it struggles to read a disc, and then gives up.. . .
It may be because the flat rubber grip ring that presses against the disc inside the disc drive has been made "friction free" by dust sticking on it. The rubber is meant to have a high friction contact to spin the disc easily, consistently and accurately BUT once the friction is reduced the disc can not be accurately positioned. The drive will try and try but if it can't find the index tracks etc, it will eventually give up.
A proper solution is to open everything up and clean the rubber to restore the contact friction - not too easy - BUT there is a method (which has worked for me) of wetting the inner most part of a disc (around the central spindle hole) slightly, then loading the disc. This can create friction, also some of the dust is stuck to the disc when it is removed. so . . .
I suggest loading some dampened old discs and ejecting them a few times.
