Hi :money: and all,
I had home insurance and had lot of water damage in my house so made a claim with esure which got refused because they said: my contents are worth more (£17,000) than what I was insured for (£10000) so they invalidated my policy and refunded the amount I paid them.
esure said I provided false information so my policy is invalid (both building and contents became invalid as it was combined policy).
FSO said the same! because it's in their policy booklet that they can refuse a claim if you are under or over insured!
Had no choice
got my house repaired myself slowly over last 2 years.
And the joy continues..
Now I can't get insurance because every insurer asks if:
"You or any person living with you or covered under this policy have never had insurance refused, cancelled, declared null and void or had any special terms imposed"
I think this is true because my policy was cancelled? so I am trying to buy insurance and no one is providing insurance because my policy was cancelled!! It’s ridiculous.
Any suggestions on how I can get home insurance?????
Thanks,
KD

Are those insurers declining you because you have had a policy cancelled?
I would have thought they may offer you terms even if its more expesnive?
Go and see a Mortgage or Insurance advisor? They should be able to find something for you.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Its probably your best bet.
I do all my home insurance through 1 company which has 4 large companies underwriting the policies. If i had that situation i would run it by my account manager...as your an individual you wont have one of those so it will make your life easier just getting someone else to do the work.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. While I understand that they refused your claim because you were under insured, my understanding was that they would pay a percentage of the amount that you were insured for ie you had insured your contents for approx 58% of their value so the insurer would pay 58% of £10k - £5.8k.
I'm assuming of course that the policy was taken out in good faith and that you thought £10k would cover your contents.
If the Financial Ombudsman has ruled that your insurer was in the right, I don't know of anything else that you can do.
There are companies that will consider you circumstances - maybe try

I used to work with Esure claims and know that they are very strict when it comes to under insurance.
You need to speak to an insurance broker as opposed to the comparison sites. Tell them everything.
Search 'Insurance brokers (your area/postcode)' and give them a call. Make sure they're regulated though with the FSA.0 -

Dom had a case ( Episode 3 of 15, series 6) where Esure wouldn't pay out on a burglary home insurance claim because the couple were under insured.
The couple hadn't taken into account the huge increase in the value of their gold and consequently Esure voided their policy. Having been voided were left un- insurable!!
In the end Esure paid out the claim as they agreed that the couple made an honest mistake.
Apparently their insurance should only have been voided if they were believed to have been trying to deceive the insurance company. (guidance issued by the FOS)
The programme thinks that 1/4 could be under insured because of increasing value of gold etc.
Most Home Insurance has a high value item single article limit and an overall limit.
