Welcome to MSE!
Can you narrow things down a bit for us? Do you need to use public transport, are you looking for good schools, do you like to be in the centre of a town or more in a village etc?"Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it" Einstein 19510 -
I live in Chipstead which is a very nice, 15 minutes to Gatwick by train from Coulsdon South, right into the airport and 25 into London Vic. I'd think all you would get for 250 is a 2/3 bed terrace, not ont the flight path. Also have a look at East Grinstead, Lingfield and Godstone as all very nice.0

If you want to be right near Gatwick, then Horley is closest. Its about 4 minutes on the train, plus there are lots of buses and you can even walk it if that takes your fancy!0

If your partner is going to travel to work by train, then anywhere with a reasonable train journey to Gatwick GTW railway station

Worth is lovely, but then I'm biased
There are some very good schools in the area (so I've heard from friends and seen the Ofsted(?) reports they do in the local paper etc). It's quiet and yo're only 10 minutes drive away from Gatwick.I have a simple philosophy:
Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches.

I live in Redhill, about 10mins drive from Gatwick yet no on the flightpath. Its quite good here if you stay away from the estates in the town centre and you get loads for your money. Good trains to Gatwick and Victoria/London Bridge/Brighton/Tonbridge/Thameslink/Dorking etc.
3 bed terraces or semis go for between £200-£250k round here.
