Ebay and Direct Debit

I pay my fees by direct debit and in August last year I closed a joint bank account and opened a sole one, both First Direct.
All my dd's etc were moved and ebay continued to collect the fees without any problem

Last week I received a message from ebay saying my bank had returned the dd giving the rreason as account closed, and charged me £5.
I have rung First Direct twice and there isn't a problem with the dd, and they have no knowledge of ebay trying ti take a payment.
What can I do now, I have emailed ebay twice but they just stick to their story

  • Try eBay live help on ebay.com I've had a few billing queries before and have found them to be very helpful. Also it's a lot easier than sending emails back and forth.

This is a known problem with data corruption in eBay's internal database. eBay have obviously switched your new direct debit info with your old info and attempted to debit your now closed account. Point out to eBay customer service that your other recent direct debits all came from the new account and that you have not switched back to the old account. Point out that it's an obvious error on their part.

If they persist in charging you £5 for a rejected direct debit, tell them you are happy to take them to Small Claims for compensation and you'll be contacting the media in the meantime to notify them of this problem. This should get a response.

Thanks, I've just done this after yet another email which is obviously a standard one. as it has no relevance at all to my questions.
Can I do the small claims court for a fiver?

Don't worry about going the Small Claims route - it's much easier to sell your story to a journalist working at any of the national rags. You can often get £25 - £100 depending on whether your story is used and they quote you. Document your emails and give them printouts as proof. The journos can spin it as "eBay ripoffs poor grandmother" or something newsworthy on a quiet day. ;-)

    Hi
I never pay by dd but as soon as i get the invoice i do a one time payment, its makes it easier for me to make sure i keep enough money in the account to pay, saves it coming out of the bank, and paypal getting the details wrong ,
and if my fees are high i split the payments over the month, say after 2 weeks fees are £100 i pay that and then as the fees build i pay off another load so when the final invoice comes in its not as high a lump some to pay in one go.
    I prefer it this way,
