Laptop battery dies, need help

Afternoon all.
For a while my battery was showing up that it needed replacing. I didn't want to buy a cheap battery and just never got round to finding out where to get a legit on, lazy i know.
So I just kept it plugged in when using it and took the charger out when not. Today the laptop turned off and the charging lights were not on, moved the charger to another socket still no joy. Took the battery out and plugged it back in and it lit up, when I turned it on it said it was carrying out a repair. Seemed to do this fine and from a quick look nothing is missing from any of my libraries.
Now, can I just carry on with no battery and just keep it plugged in when using, or will this mess up the laptop? Or should I really get a new battery and if so would appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction as to where to get one.

remove the battery, and just use it on the mains, it wont hurt the laptop, the only hurt is on you, when its a lovely day and you want to be sitting outside but using the laptop.0

I agree, you can just use the laptop plugged in but... if the cable is yanked the lappy will have an 'ungraceful' shutdown. I have know this to cause problems in the past. It's rare but it does happen. Goes without saying but keep your data safe, backup regularly.
Trying to see the screen outside can also be tricky. I just open the window

Thanks for your help.
I can barely see the screen outside anyway! Sure I have a long extension lead somewhere though lol0
