Areas to live in/near Edinburgh with easy commute

Hi Toothfairy4, Stockbridge is a nice (but pricey) area right near to where you would be working. I always liked the southside of Edinburgh - Morningside, Bruntsfield etc 10 - 15 minutes on the bus to the city centre. It depends on what you are looking for - city centre handiness or more peace and quiet. Also do you want to rent in the area and then buy in that same area? You might already know this but housing in Edinburgh (central and areas surrounding) are mainly flats in tenements, if you want a house with a garden you'll have to look at more outlying areas, where you get more for your money. We lived in Edinburgh for 4 years and then moved to Fife when we wanted to get a house and garden. I still work in Edinburgh and get the train - the train is less than 20 minutes.
Good luck with your house hunting.0 -
Hi Martha, no does not necessarily have to be the same area we would buy in. Plan is to rent somewhere handy then start looking around at areas to buy in. We would be looking for a house with garden yes (have a dog), I wouldn't mind living in fife but my husband works really late and would be too late to get last train back and is reluctant to deal with the bridge every day...0

I would also reccomend the Portobello area, frequent bus to city centre (26) and you can alos get the X26 (express) in peak periods for quicker service. From Portobello High St to waterloo place/princes street in 15 minutes. I work in Canonmills and make it door to door in abour half an hour.0

West Lothian lived there for 25 years Murieston near to Livingston south train station, the bus service is terrible though and expensive Firstbus as LRT do not go there,Corstorphine is really nice lots of expensive and in-expensive properties, the buses are excellent LRT and one fare £1.40 day ticket £3.50 you can travel for miles:T I find with the tramworks the buses are not held up too much,if you live in Edinburgh or area served by LRT you do not need a car,the parking is very very expensive if you get a space, you will love it up here believe me this is a great city:j oh and Welcome !!!please do not pick on me for my grammar,I left school at fifteen and worked in the building trade for 55years ,

Bathgate is a town, not an area as such
so its has good/bad areas
Train would be fine
bit of a mare by road as it comes into the Gyle.
At rush hour its gridlock
however that stands for anywhere outside the city on the west0 -
Just seems to be a lot of new development going on there, so lots of houses to rent at reasonable prices, seems like might not be a bad option with decent transport links until we get our bearings.0

Also forgot to say for Portobello as it is on the coast line it is not affected as bad as other areas come winter time with the ice and snow. When there has been really bad winters previously my wife and I made it into work every day when people from west lothian and fife were unable to reach work due to roads being unusable and train and bus problems.0

itsa good point
even comparing Porty to the likes of EH12 (the far west of the city)
EH12 can be markedly colder and fost/snow stays longer0
