Hi,

Myself and my husband are moving to Edinburgh in June, both of us will be working in the city centre (him George st, me Dundas st). I'm just after some advice really on areas to live in which would make commuting easiest? We would be looking to rent a house for approx 6 months (max 800pcm) then looking to buy.

Thanks

The edinburgh bus service is really good, so pretty much anywhere within Edinburghs going to be pretty easy.

search for LRT & you should get a bus map.

Otherwise, you can easily travel by train or bus from towns such as Livingston, Dunfermline, etc.

Don't go west of Edinburgh unless you are travelling by train as the tram works are a nightmare just now with no end in sight!

Towards the east, Musselburgh is ideal, especially near the train station as it's only 6 mins into Waverley Station which is 5 mins walk from George St / Dundas St.

Dunfermline, good value for money in terms of property, takes about 30mins to get into town on the train. Getting a seat on said train can be a challenge if you get on after Dunfermline! Although commuter service is frequent.

Driving in from Dunfermline can take anywhere between 30mins to several hours (bridge closure/accidents/volume of traffic).

My GF used to live in Prestonpans which would take me 30-50mins depending on route to get to murrayfield area (driving)

It depends what your looking for really. You could spend 6 months in the city, Leith offers good value for cash and a plentiful renters market, good bus service to town if required.

    Not sure about West Lothian.

South Queensferry is nice and shares the same train network as the fife circle.
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

    Hi there.

I'm probably biased having lived on the east side of Edinburgh all my life, but I certainly thinks it's the nicer side of town, being near to the beach in Portobello is a bonus (it can look quite pretty on one of our rare sunny days).

I work just off the bottom of Dundas Street (I'm guessing you must be Standard Life or RBS?!) and I can get to work by bus in about 40 minutes from my house in the Craigentinny area. The part I live in is very quiet, lots of bungalows if that's your thing.

Also have lived in Leith and if the quiet life is not your style then there are tons of nice apartments down there, I'm sure many are rented.
  • I would live in the pentland hills, there's a bus stop that takes you right into Ed. *sighs*

As said, theres a great bus service
find an area/property you fancy. then bung the details into the LRT journey planner
that will show frequency and what buses you can get

Thank you everyone, heading up there at start of May to look as all the properties advertised now seem to be available now or by end of april, so think we need to hold out a bit longer!

    properties usually turn over quickly
bear in mind theres a large student population
so you may find more properties getting ready to free up nearer the end of term
