Small cheap motorway car

Got an old Agila at the moment, good round town hack, and if you need a washing machine moving it comes in to it's own, but on motorway it really gets on my chest hairs, 60mph its doing 3000+ revs, it,s like a sewing machine on steroids.
Am after a cheap alliterative, got £2k to spend, badge means nothing to me, just want a car thats as cheap as possible in purchase and running cost's. It must be able to go down the motorway at 70mph with out the valves hatching an escape plan.
Any suggestions please?

MK2 Mondeo. 1.8 is the best petrol for economy vs power - 1.8TD is gutless but does have the advantage of being able to run it on at least 50% veggie oil. Or a Vectra but I'm not sure of the veggie oil aspect of that.
£2k gets you a good one with a chunk of money to spare.0 -
see whats available for this money from your local trusted dealer
he will negotiate a little if sticker says £1995 but be kind he has another sprog on the way:D0 -

Interesting how times change my first car was doing around 4000 at 70 now anything more than 2200 seems a lot. Most small cheap cars will be working hard, bigger more expensive to run maintain lumps will be more relaxed."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Skoda Fabia 1.9 tdi.
At 60mph, it'll be doing 1900rpm (and about 60 mpg)
Galvanised body, bulletproof engine, estate version if you want, and plenty at the 2k mark now.0 -

The 1.6 is the newer engine and probably wont be in the 2k budget yet... the older 1.8 TDDI or TDCI engines most likely will0 -
Hyundai Elantra diesel.
Toys everywhere, reliable, old-school diesel engine with no DMF or DPF and £1500 for a 2005-06 car.
Ugly as sin but as an Agila owner you'll be used to that
