Postal order - bank or PO

Have sold an item on ebay and the buyer has paid by Postal Order?

Can I exchange for cash at PO or does it have to go into a bank account?

On the back of the Postal order it says something about if it is "crossed" it can only be paid into bank, otherwise it can be bank or PO. What does "crossed" mean?

If I pay it into a bank, could it bounce like a cheque?

Cheers

M

  • i always take mine to the post office, hand them over before i post the parcel and get the cash in my hand, then

    1) i know the item is fully paid-for before i send it
    2) i have the money on hand to pay the lady at the post office

    :)

Thanks. That is what I would prefer to do, but this thing about if its "crossed" then it must be paid into a bank has got me wondering if I can do that...

A crossed postal order will have 2 lines running from top to bottom (not necessarly the whole length of PO)

Uncrossed will just have your name (not allways) and how much the PO is for

So if uncrossed cash at PO, crossed treat like a cheque.

If unsure, just take into Post Office, you will soon know if they give you the money for it or not

  • Crossed means 2 vertical lines through the wording (like a cheque has) if it's not crossed it can be cashed at the PO, if it is crossed it has to go to the bank, it's as good as cash, but I've read on here about stolen ones....
  • a crossed postal order has to be paid into a bank, and treated as a cheque, still has to clear through the bank..

the crossed part is 2 lines drawn across the postal order by the person sending it..and should have your name on it as the payee

  • By the way, crossed postal orders can be paid in over the counter at the PO if you bank with cahoot, smile, or various other PO affiliated banks. All you need is your bank card.
