Fare splitting question

I found a way to save some money on my monthly travelcard but I'm wondering if it is frowned upon and can't really find any info on it.

My commute is from Clapham Junction to Windsor. A monthly card plus zones 1-6 (possibly 2-6, haven't decided yet) is quite a bit. But if I'm getting the 1-6 anyway, could I not get a ticket from Feltham (the last station in zone 6 on the way to Windsor) to Windsor and then my zones 1-6 to cover the rest? It's cheaper for sure, but I don't know how much they care about things like that.

Anyone have any experience with it?

As long as the ticket you have is valid you're OK.

The rail ticketing system used to be a real nightmare and those in the know could, and did, use this to their advantage to get cheaper fares until many of the legitimate loopholes were removed.

There are still a few left.

    Yes, a perfectly good idea.

If you are planning to combine a season ticket from Feltham to Windsor with a zonal Travelcard, be aware that the train you use must stop at Feltham.
From the timetable, it looks like they all stop at Feltham anyway.
  • Thanks! All the trains stop at Feltham, so that's definitely not a problem :)

I'm really glad it'll work out; I move in a few weeks and my travel budget is going to go down by £80!

    It's valid - yes.

But I don't see how you are saving money

A monthly season between Windsor and Eton Riverside and zones 1-6 is £308.80

A monthly season between Windsor and Eton Riverside and Feltham is £151.70. A zone 1-6 monthly travelcard is £205.10 - total £356-80

Or am I missing some subtlety?
  • A point to point monthly to Windsor & Eton Central is £282.70

And one to Riverside is £238.10

So why do you need the travelcard pegged onto it?

I currently commute from Paddington. The monthly card is £235, but with the additional zones 1-6, it's £305. I think there must be some sort of discount for adding zones to a travelcard. So what I was thinking was £151 + £68 (the difference of what I currently pay and what just P - W would be) would still be cheaper than Clapham Junction - Windsor, which is £238. Plus then I'd have the additional zones at my disposal :)

I do a lot of traveling other than my commute. Having the zones attached is cheaper for me than PAYG!

    I'm not following your logic

You won't be paying £151 plus £68 - you'll be paying £151 plus the cost of a travelcard. You need it anyway, so why not include it in your Windsor season ticket?

If you don't need zone one, then a Windsor and Eton Riverside to Zones 2-6 is £268 a month if that's any help.

    I guess I'm a bit confused myself!

I currently have a travelcard that is Paddington - Windsor plus zones 1-6 and it costs £305. Without 1-6, it should be £235. So I guess I'm now confused about why adding zones on is only an additional £68...

The whole reason I wanted to go this route anyway was because I do often need zone 1! I may pop down to the station later and ask how much it would cost.

As a Paddington Windsor season includes some travel in zones 1-6 anyway (ie as far as West Drayton) you have already paid part of the cost of the travelcard - so adding the whole of zones 1-6 doesn't cost the full price

A season ticket that covers both routes (Paddington and Waterloo) with zones 1-6 is £328, just to add to your choice.

Otherwise it's £305 (only the Paddington route) or £308 (Waterloo only) - both with 1-6 included.
