HDTV help please with bad sky & dvd picture

Hello
We bought this today...

But they gave us this

(yeah I know, same TV, but thought i'd mention it)

Anyway...The Xbox 360 looks fantastic on it !!
The Sky and our DVD player look POOP !!!
Both the sky and DVD player are normal scart. Neither are HD but Im sure I should be getting a better picture. Especially with my Sky picture ! Its really pants ! Its not clear at all. Ive tinkered with everything I can find but its still rubbish.
Please does anyone have any ideas on what can be the problem ?
Ive now cancelled sky and will just use the freesat channels but I am planning on getting an outdoor aerial installed but £150 is a whole load of dosh But for now the Sky looks just poo, and its sad cos everyone else I know who has a new lcd tv has a great picture !

the simple answer is to update your cables. the tin scarts you are probably using cary many imperfections and as lcd and plasma telvisions are very succeptable to intereference anyway, they are no good.

update to good quality gold cables. it will dramatically improve your picture quality. the 360 cable is already gold hence the fact that it looks better.

i kno its more money to spend but 'which' recomend spending 30% of the cost of your tv on new cables. try something from the QED or Monster range for optimum performance.

'get all the picture you paid for' as they say!

Never heard of Novatech have you seen one in a shop anywhere? You could have just bought a crappy television. It could be the cables but I doubt it, I wouldn't spend a fortune on scart leads - try richersounds.

Novatech have been around years ! Great customer service and a good reputation. The Tv is actually Hyundai anyway ! We checked them out before we bought as they had them on display in the showroom. Im going to try a posh scart, Argos do a gold one for £29.99 and if the picture isnt better I can always return it.

Why? SD content on flat-panel screens is known to be poorer than 'old fashioned' tellies.

Really I don't have any troubles on my plasma. Must be an LCD thing.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!
Make sure your DVD and Sky box are set to RGB out (RGB enabled)
Make sure your scart leads are fully wired (all the pins are present)
Make sure your tv is set to RGB in

If your Skybox and DVD are not set up like this you will get an inferior picture

This very much depends on the up-scaling abilities of the lcd. (How the tv changes the standard amount of lines to the higher number of lines needed to fill the higher resolution screen.)

If there are component outputs (3 colour coded phono sockets) on the dvd and component inputs on the tv, then using these, and setting the output to ‘progressive’ would also vastly improve the picture quality (even over RGB).

Have you gone into the picture settings in setup and changed the settings in there.

Not at home, so can't tell you where and what to change, but it's in there anyway. When I got my Plasma, I though the pic was terrible, 'till I tried the settings on Sky.

As for the DVD player, how old is it and does it up-scale? This may be the problem as well as the cables/Leads.

Edit: Remember that you will NOT get true HD unless you have Sky HD and an HD DVD player!
