Oh damn-what are Halifax like with charges?

Options
Been in hospital recently and was £3 short of a direct debit payment-no overdraft on the account-just had a letter to say they are charging me £39!!!! for not having enough in there. If I go and explain to them in the morning that I was in hospital and pay the extra in to cover the direct debit, will they be nice and refund that charge?

have you had any before? If not then I would of thought they will refund it without too much hassle.

If you have had charges before then they can see its not a 1 off and prob won't, to be fair they probably get people using excuses like "i have been i hospital" all the time. Not saying yours is an excuse but it will be for a lot.
  • Nope not had any charges before at all and have had the account about a year so fingers crossed.

you should be ok then, explain its a one off. If they say they won't refund it then threaten to close your account that should work.

I did something similar once with the Halifax and as soon as I realised I rang them up and asked them if they would waive the fee. Because I'd never done it before they did it straight away. You should be ok, let us know how you get on.

  • If they absolutely refuse threaten to take them to court. They will eventually back down as the charges are unlawful.

If you have no fun with them, wander over to the Reclaim your Bank Charges thread, where there is lots of useful information on how to get your money back.

  • You should get your charge back straight away. If you have telephone banking you can do it that way to save you a trip into the branch - the main trick is to be nice - you catch far more flies with honey than salt (or something like that...):D

Wouldn't bees be a better word to go with honey though?
