Allowance for cleaner

Hi all

My grandad is getting frail and we were looking to help him out by hiring a cleaner to do some house cleaning for about 2 hours each month.

We have a trusted cleaner in mind which would cost £12 per hour. Is there some sort of way to subsidise the cost with some sort of government allowance?

Are we even able to choose who we use?

Thanks.

Have you investigated if he's eligible for DLA (if under 65) or attendance allowance - if over?
This would pay at least somewhat towards the costs.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. No idea what DLA is (disability allowance?) but he's 85...

Attendance allowance sounds right. What does that give and what do you need to qualify?

what do you need to qualify?

To have at least one disability that creates needs that the person should need help with.

It does NOT include household chores, and does NOT include anything to do with being mobile (ie there is no mobility section in AA) etc.

The needs have to be connected to a bodily function.

Being 85 does not by itself mean that they are disabled.

You should check through some of the threads, there are lots of S/E cleaners who charge a lot less than £12ph.

Can't you all as a family manage 2 hours a month to help out your grandad?

I feel contact should be made with Age UK (was Age Concern) who can do a home visit to discuss and check what benefits your Granddad should be getting
  • You could contact Social Services, he might be entitled to a home help.
