Vista / Telewest Broadband nightmare!

Hello everyone, I need help!

My mother has just bought a new computer with Windows Vista on it. All of a sudden, her broadband internet connection with Telewest has stopped working. Telewest support lines cannot help, as they simply say that they have not been trained in the new Vista OS and don't have much info on it!

I've trawled through the various forums on the net and know that it is possible to connect to the internet with Vista / Telewest, I'm just not sure how. Appears to be something to do with configuring your network connections. If anyone has had the same issue or would like to share how I can fix this, I would be very grateful if you could help.

The modem is the telewest motorola one (not sure if that's relevant).

I'll have to explain the instructions over the phone, so some clear instructions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

  • Ah, Vista. So good they named it once.

I've got Telewest/Virgin Media and Vista is incompatible with my wireless network even though the router is less than 6 weeks old.

The only way I can connect on my new laptop (running Vista Home Basic) via Telewest has been to run a cable from the wireless router (the Motorola cable router plugs into this) to the laptop and connect wired.

Dunno if that's of any help, but that's my story so far!

you need to buy a new wireless router and wireless adapter if you are connecting wirelessly. It should still work with no problems via ehternet (LAN) cable , I have set people up like this as a temporary measure

this set from Pcworld works on Vista

  • To the OP, does the old PC work?

To Sadie, I doubt that your router is your issue..

    To Browntoa?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • The computer is currently connected wired, using the Ethernet connection and still no joy. The old laptop connected fine and that was on XP.

    Anyone any other ideas??
  • Does the old one work?

    Does start, search cmd

    ipconfig

    give you a non-169 ipaddress?

Does it if you do a

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • The old one is broken I think, which created the need for a new computer. But it connected to the net fine when it was working.

try powering off the pc and unplugging the cable modem from the mains for a few minutes, then turn off the modem again, wait for it to become stable, then turn the Pc back on and let it boot up, their is no reason why it should not connect and work

@ sadie....the only way to overcome the wireless problem is to buy a new router like the one i posted

Telewests are "locked" and you cannot connect to them without their special wireless software, which does not work on Vista

the unlocked ones I posted work on Vista

  • Browntoa - Cheers, I'll give it a try.

Albertross - that's a little advanced, not sure what the answers to those questions are.

Is ipconfig a command that I should run??
  • Vista worked with no problem on our 'old' Linksys router & WAP - no reason why it shouldn't, they don't need drivers & as long as you have drivers for your wireless network card in the laptop then they will work. It must be down to configuration of your network - don't go spending money on kit you don't need before troubleshooting your network.
