Nationwide - money vanished

Options
Hi everyone,

I am in a blind panic.

I went onto my online banking and tried to transfer £500 to a person I'm renting a villa from this year. It said "technical difficulties" and I went back to the home screen and the money had not left my account. I tried again and got the same message. I went back to the home screen and £1000 has left my account.

I telephoned Nationwide who said they couldn't see any activity on my internet history and that the mini statement was showing me as being £1000 overdrawn on 30th March whereas the balance on my "full statement" is what it was and certainly what it should be. I do not have an overdraft facility and there is no way I was £1000 overdrawn.

Nationwide say the system needs to update itself and to call back between 9-5 but I am so worried! I have emailed the person I was transferring the money to and asked them to check their account and send £500 if it is there.

I have no idea what could be the problem and am probably just venting some worry on here!

Your story isn't very clear, probably due to the blind panic. When did you do these transfers, was it today, yesterday, or on 30th March, when Nationwide suggest you were £1K overdrawn? If it was after the 30th then your balance at that time is a separate issue.

If it was done today then I expect that what you are seeing is right. My experience of Nationwide is that transfers made online show up instantly on your statement, but that the full statement won't show it until after tonight's updates, so if it's showing that £1K has gone I'd say that is probably correct. I would imagine that you will need to get the payee to return £500.

My recommendation would always be that if you get an error when doing a transfer online to do some checking to see if it has happened or not before trying again, and if you're not sure then leave it if possible until you can be sure.

If you have no luck after ringing them again, I would recommend going into a branch, they are more likely to be able to help you.

If this doesn't work, I would write to:

    Member Relations
    Nationwide Building Society
    NW 2020
    SWINDON
    SN38 1NW

They aim to solve most problems in two days from receipt.
