Once you are married then yes, a joint account makes more sense (especially if you have kids/one has no income)
but as soon as you move in together? just seems jumping the gun and creating hassle. what if after 6 months it doesn't work out?
(and by sticking all joint expenditure on one credit card that both use, you do avoid the who paid what for last, just one bill to split 50/50 (or however) at month end)0 -

Bad enough idea when married. Calamity waiting to happen IMO.
You say I don't have a decent credit file- do you mean because I have an overdraft and a store card? Surely this isn't that terrible? Won't he create an association by moving in with me anyway?
Why would this make more sense if we are married?burnoutbabe wrote: »Once you are married then yes, a joint account makes more sense (especially if you have kids/one has no income)
One of the main reasons I want to get a firm grip of our finances is that I have been married before, and my ex husband controlled all our finances (the complete opposite to my OH). I was given a certain amount to spend each month and everything else, he controlled. He didn't like me knowing what went in and out of the account, and I hated that (which is one of the reasons he is now my ex!).
I think one of the most frequent answers to my OP is that everyone is different, and we will obviously have to talk things through more thoroughly. It is very interesting to read what works for everyone else though.Getting married to Mr M [STRIKE]August[/STRIKE] April 2013!:TWedding diet - 16lbs:jRachel x0 -
In our house all monies go into one pot. my DH has no interest or idea what is in the joint account. He earns 4 times my salary and has a small amount of spending money each month, the rest is mine, lol
We have been together for 20 years and have never argued over money, if we have it spare we can spend it, if not....0 -

This is what my OH wants to do, but after asking for advice on here, I am not sure if it is wise! Did you do this from day one or after you were married?Getting married to Mr M [STRIKE]August[/STRIKE] April 2013!:TWedding diet - 16lbs:jRachel x0
