Grr - builders lost key now claim they never had it!

We are having a new garage built and we gave the project manager our spare key to our back door. The back door is to our utility room and doesn't provide access into the house as the door into the kitchen is lockable. So, the idea was that they had a key which would provide access to water and power (sockets) in the utility room while we are at work etc.
The project manager has just asked for access to the utility room tomorrow morning for plumbing and when I said "but you already have a key" he says no he doesn't.
But they've stored their kettle in there and the door has sometimes been left unlocked when we've come home!
It's his word against ours - we don't have proof (unfortunately, we didn't think of getting him to sign a receipt for the key) and he just about stopped short of calling me a liar! (Why would I lie about it?!)
I have refused to give him another key (we don't have another spare anyway) and feel that we'll now have to consider changing the locks. Which isn't the worst thing in the world but it's just ANNOYING!! (And I hate being called a liar!)
Ok, rant over!!!
He said he will check with the other people (that he subcontracted out jobs to).

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional :j
