Registered Keeper - Different Driver

Here's the situation.

New car. Registered under my Father, owned by the car's Finance company. I however will be the driver. Can I insure the car, put my father as registered keeper if they ask but still be able to drive the car? Or would the insurance be void?

Should I change the name of the registered keeper from my father to myself, or does it not matter as long as I am the principle driver?

Moreover, I have lost the registration log book, I know with a V62 form it is easy to get another, with a fee, but can I still tax the car, using my fathers details but I drive the car?

Any help will do!
Thanks

Some insurers wont allow you to insure a vehicle that isnt either yours or your spouses but many will. All you need to do is ensure you correctly declare the owner/ keeper/ main driver etc

For insurance, it's always better to have as few people in the chain as possible, so you'll probably find a wider range of insurers if the keeper, the policyholder, and the main driver are all the same person (the legal owner may be the finance house??). But legally, there's nothing to stop those being 4 different people1

    Re: Tax.
Even if you don't have the V5, the registered keeper will get a reminder a few weeks before the existing tax disc expires. You can tax the car with either the V5 or the reminder. With neither, it will be more difficult, as some years they clamped down on issuing tax discs without any documentation, as it was too easy to get a tax disc for a ringed stolen vehicle just by walking in to any post office. see here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069680

You can put the owner down as your father. DO NOT CHANGE THE REGISTERED KEEPER. Your father can not pass the ownership on, and if the finance get wind of it will be coming for payment in full
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • Wait, so if I wanted to we couldn't fill in the registration document to make me the registered keeper - without the finance company asking for the full payment?

Wouldn't the principle owner still pay but someone else just drives the car and is the registered keeper of the car?

You need to check the specific finance agreement about this to get a definitive answer.

The finance company may have specific terms about who the registered keeper is (which you should follow), but, as has been stated here a million times and is written in large letters on every registration document - The keeper is not necessarily the legal owner.

Therefore, changing the keeper does not necessarily change the legal owner.

but it does get the finance companys attention, and without the finance companys permission you cant transfer the keeper
