Laptop touchpad Problem

I have just got a laptop and I have never used one before. I am having a bit of difficulty with the touchpad buttons, they do not seem to work like a mouse. On a mouse I double click the left button to confirm an action.

On the laptop it seems as if the button is constantly depressed even if I am not pressing it. This makes it very difficult to navigate because every time the pointer is near an icon it will automatically start up as if I have double clicked on it, or it will drag the icon across the screen.

This means I have been opening applications without wanting to and I can never get to the function I want to complete because once the pointer is near something which can start up, it keeps double clicking on everything.

Is there anyway I can change the settings so that the touchpad buttons work the same way as a mouse button. I cannot use the laptop in its current settings, and I don't want to use a mouse just yet.

  • are you keeping your finger on the touchpad as you move, or lifting off? The touchpad can also double click.

You should be able to switch off 'Tapping' in the touchpad configuration options. Try Start, Settings, Control Panel, Mouse, Hardware, Pointing device, Settings or you may be able to get there from the icon in your system tray by the clock.

The problem definitely is that the touchpad is working as a additional button. Unfortunately the touchpad is so sensitive that it is making it impossible to use. I have looked in the settings and there is no option to switch off the tap, using the current driver/software. I have an NEC Generation laptop, if anyone else has this laptop could they please tell how they disabled the double tap on the touchpad.
  • I think you just need to get used to using it, you need to keep your finger in contact as you move.

I find it hard to believe that the settings cannot be changed, however you have not given specific model information. On this page enter 'technical' in the search box and 'touchpad' in the about box for more info.

The name of the laptop is generation here is a link to it on the NEC website.

I have downloaded the drivers from there and I can assure it does not give you the option to disable the tap on the touchpad. At this point I have given up and I am going to get a mouse.

Your model seems to have a Versa Glide Touchpad and not the much more common Synaptics touchpad. Think that you will just have to adapt to it.

Yeah it is definitely looking that way. I am getting better with the touchpad, but I can only use it for the most simplest of tasks. That is why I am going to get one of those laptop mice.

Next time I will get a laptop from an established company like Dell rather than some bargain.

    Hi

This is a serious reply - have a few games of minesweeper and solitaire - these games were actually bundled with the first editions of windows, so users could get use to using a mouse and pointer.

Minesweeper gets you clicking accurately with both buttons (left exposes, right marks) and Solitaire gets you double clicking, dragging and dropping.

edit Just recalled that clicking both buttons reveals free areas if you got your marking right .... now to get that best time down ...
