Drivers may need to pay £288pa tax to park car at work

From the Daily Mail. I'm going to post link and run with this and the other thread I'm starting as need to go to work, so over to you to dissect and discuss. I seem to remember this was also mooted a couple of years back, so not a new idea.

Scheme is starting in Nottingham:

    Just charge your employees a nominal fee to use it.

    No benifit == no tax.

    Makes no difference. The firm will have to pay a tax on the car parking spaces whether you make them free for employees or charge them £50 per hour.

    I think it risks being a tax that is punitive to rural dwellers (who might be working in urban areas where there is alternative trabsport, but would struggle to access it near their homes) or to those who cannot afford to live near (or use) and oncreasingly expensive public transport system.

    A solution to the former issue might be to part drive part public transport. It also might mean, not at these levels perhaps but in the future if the cost rises householders in the fringe areas where people want to dump cars and grab a bus, can find a rental market for a driveway space.

    The scheme in Nottingham is suppose to be partly to pay for an extension to the tram line. Many people in outlining areas which will still be affected by the parking charges are unhappy about this because they feel they are paying towards something that will not be of benefit for them. Also there is unhappiness that some of the bigger firms are absorbing some or all of the cost yet the smaller ones are having to pass it on to employees. It's ended up that what you will pay depends both where you are in Nottingham and who you work for.

    It's not clear from the article whether this is just a local scheme which migh be adopted by other councils or a national initiative being piloted in Nottingham. Given that the govt doesn't appear to have said anything about this, looks like the former, and probably therefore won't affect most people.

    My last Company had huge swathes of land including a farm on it, and whilst it did not have plenty of parking, it did have two or three multi-stories as well as open-air parking. It was useful as working overtime (usually for no overtime pay) was a standard thing for all employees to do, increasing productivity for the Company, I suppose.

    I can't imagine local bus services coping with the additional passengers, and the cost to employees anyway of public transport, even though it was subsidised, was still hugely expensive.

    I think that if this goes ahead I would be demanding better bus shelters, ones that actually do shelter everyone waiting, are lit, and heated!

    PS - just thinking about it a bit more. I guess the poorer people will be getting public transport to work and this idea would affect the higher paid managers who get free parking spaces. So would be happy about that. I seem to recall that Stoke Council do charge for parking spaces and don't have many anyway. Just what I recall from a friend temping there.

    Which your promptly claim back on your tax form as an "essential expense involved in doing your job".

    Lots of people have to pay to park their cars when they go to work - anyone whose employer does not have a car parking area and who works in an area where there is no long-stay street-parking.

    £288 p.a. would seem cheap to most of them.
