Why is it that when hiring a car in the UK it is much cheaper to go direct than use a cashback site even after (if) I get the cashback??

Because the cashback site has to make a profit.
Presumably the rental companies do not see any reason to offer a discount to the cashback site but the site offers the service in the hope that people will simply assume they are getting a better deal.There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0
