unhappy with tesco

Hi guys,
Just really wanted to check what I was told was right.
My daughter was brought a swimming costume by her auntie for her birthday, they sent the receipt in case it needed to be exchanged. My daughter wasnt keen on the costume so drove the 15miles to our nearest tesco, we looked around but she couldnt see anything she wanted so i asked the girl on customer services if she could have a gift card but was told it could only be exchanged for another item of clothing even though we had original receipt, but obviously not the card it was paid for with.
In the end my daughter let her younger sister choose something, i thought as long as you had the receipt you would be offered a gift casrd that could be used at a later date?
Thanks for replies in advance!

Depends what tesco's policy is.
Statutory rights only allow you to return an item if it is faulty. Any contractual rights will depend on what terms formed part of the contract. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Normally there are signs up in shops about non return of swimming costumes/knickers etc because of hygiene issues, so you did well actually getting any thing to be honest.
Obviously this doesnt cover faulty items.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Not only that, but seeing as the purchase wasn't made by you, then you have no rights to return at all, even if faulty. (unless it was specified at the time of purchase that it was to be a gift)0

I've bought & returned swimwear to Tesco without any problems at all.
I think (but may be wrong) that they insist on the hygiene sticker being intact.
So - question for the OP - was the hygiene sticker still on the swimsuit?
Do Tesco do gift cards or credit notes?
If they don't, the only option would be an exchange or a refund.
Reading the original post, the Tesco staff may have not allowed a refund as the item was paid for by a card that the refund couldn't be made back to.
Although I recently bought an item from Primark with a credit card that was found to have been cloned that evening and when I wanted to return one item and explained that I no longer had the same card that I'd paid on and the assistant refunded to my new card without any problem.
BUT, the difference may have been because both cards were in my name.
It would be helpful if the OP could say what reason her daughter was given for not being allowed a gift card, credit note or full refund.0 -
Hi, thanks for all the replies, the only reason given was that it was brought in the clothing department so thats where it had to be returned.
The swimming costume was returned with tags and hygiene strip still in place. i've had gift cards issued in the past from Tesco when i've returned the item without the receipt before and just presumed thats what would happen.
The only reason that it was an issue as my daughter couldnt find anything she liked that day and i was worried that if i waited that it would have gone passed the 28 days return policy.
Thanks again for all the replies0 -
Forgot to ask earlier:
was the return within 28 days of purchase?
If so, I still don't understand the reason for refusal.
Tesco receipts say that if you change your mind about your purchase you can return to store with receipt and product as sold within 28 days.
It does say 'conditions apply to some products' but as I said earlier, swimwear can be returned for a refund as long as the hygiene strip is still in place.
If she'd said something about the card originally used to pay for the item I could understand it but to say "it was bought in the clothing department so thats where it had to be returned" makes no sense to me.
Don't all returns go through Customer Services anyway?
I think you had someone who didn't really know Tesco policy on refunds.0 -
Yes the costume was returned one week after being purchased and returned to the clothes desk.0
