questions to compers

I totally understand this is not right place for this thread but got some questions to compers. I am quite new to comping but quite concerned about identity fraud. When you enter competitions do you normally give correct details of your birthday, phone number or you making it all up? It was an article when people are warned not to give too much details because of the identity frauds. Just wanted to ask how to protect yourself while comping. Thank you

I am quite new to this but have found it isnt very often you are asked for a dob and telephone number wise there are quite a few where you can choose not to put it. I dont have a good credit rating etc so if someone tried to nick my identity they would wish they hadnt bothered. Lol.July 2013 wins: Lilac Skoot, Night out for 2 at Nandos & Cineworld
Best wins so far: £500, GHD styler, Tassimo T40 Machine0 -
I tend to enter my actual details however if I feel that a website is anyway dodgy I just don't enter. The nice people on here are good at pointing out if they think it is dodgy or a scam.Overdraft = £1000 Emergency fund = £2500

I am woman - I am allowed to lie about my age - :rotfl::rotfl:
telephone number - no as I want to be contacted if I win!!0 -
I give moby phone unless it is ITV type then no prob home phone, There is no reason why you cant change DOB, day, month, that I know of so long as you are over 18 for those specific comps, I wonder about not winning techie type comps because I declare my advanced age. I do however win lots of food, fizzy drinks and face cream. lol.0

i just give my mobile number
i only really enter on the big sites IE ITV, all the mag ones etc
a lot of comps dont require phone or birthday though0 -
The only problem you have with providing a false date of birth is if you win and they ask for proof of identity/age (as somecomps do -especially if its for alcohol. I have been asked for perfume win too)£2 Savers Club for 2022 #120

I've always given my full real details, i always put the landline too as our house blocks mobile signals so if someone phoned our mobile whilst we were at home it would never ring, but i do always check the little tick boxes as i never allow them to pass on my details to 3rd parties.
I've been comping for nearly 2 years now and the worse i've had is the odd advertising call (touch wood) I would be devastated if i entered a comp with false details and won an amazing prize but couldn't claim it because i didn't have the ID

If I can get away with not putting the details I don't, but otherwise am truthful, in case they try to verify those same details later.

I think many companies use competitions as a form of market research.
For example asking for date of birth may be their way of finding the profile of the sort of consumer that buys their products or visits their website.
However as compers most of us know just how devious some of our fellow compers can be just for the chance of winning a prize.
Not only false d.o.b's are given but exaggerating how often we buy certain products or how likely we are in the future seem quite common.
If some of these companies realised just how inaccurate this 'market research' was I doubt whether they would continue doing it.0 -
I have a separate email account for comps so any spams go there and I just search those emails for any wins then delete the others. I always use mobile number rather than house phone unless it's for ITV ones. I am always careful about ticking or unticking boxes so that they don't share any info.
For those companies that tend to phone marketing etc I sometimes change the last digit on my mobile number but leave the other information as correct so that they can still contact me with a win.
I've had a few spam e.mails and some phishing ones but that's about it and you can always spot those so you just report them.:grouphug::lovethoug:lovethoug Keeping busy very important at the moment. Lost my loving partner this year. Always in my thoughts.0
