Getting internet with no home broadband - whats the options?

Hi,

If I cant get home broadband through the landline at my current place, what are the options for me to get internet access? What is the difference between dongle and mobile internet, and what is BT hotspot? Are there other options?

Mobile internet on your Smart phone, can be tethered to a PC. A mobile dongle uses the same mobile technology. BT provides BT FON.

Why can't you receive BB on your line? I live in a very rural area, and although I only get around 2.7 Mb, I can do most stuff on the Net.

Are you a member of a local Library? If so, you can register with them, receive a PIN and use the Library machines, usually free.

If ADSL broadband is not possible (why, are you a long way out from the exchange?), then the only options are VM cable (if available in your area), mobile broadband via a dongle (if decent 3G signal available) or satellite broadband.
Those are in increasing order of cost.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I didnt make it totally clear, but I dont have a phone line at my current place so thats why I cant get home broadband atm.

So why did you refer to 'the landline at my current place'?
Without an active landline, no ADSL broadband is possible, you must use one of the other options (but much easier just to install a landline if you want a decent broadband service, unless cable is an option).

I guess bad English. I should have written, at my current place, I cant get standard home broadband through landline. Sorry for not making it clear.

What about cable? I'd tether your mobile to your laptop/PC and use that as long as you have an unlimited data plan.

Cable is cable, tethering is tethering: they are mutually exclsuive.

By cable, I mean, do you have access to Virgin Media where you are? Check what you are able to get here by entering your details.

Tethering, some network plans do have unlimited data (within reason). I pay £19 for unlimited data, landline calls and texts and can pay an extra £15 for unlimited worldwide data.

I checked for cable availability but didnt have access to VM.

Could you tell me some network plans that allow tethering with unlimited data? I am not a very heavy user, but going on youtube or whatever would quickly eat up any data allowance.

Regarding, getting a landline and internet through that, are you familiar with topcashback.co.uk and their offers of cashback for broadband customers? How does that work, it says 50 pounds or more in cashback when signing up for home broadband through topcashback.co.uk...That sounds outrageous and too good to be true.
