Lake District with kids. Help please

We are staying at Haven Lakeland in Flookburgh over Easter. I am looking for suggestsions of places to visit with the kids, I have 3 aged 16, 10 and 3, we love getting out and about/walking. I have a national trust membership too, but as we have never been to the lakes before am unsure of which places will be more suitable especially for the youngest.

We plan on visiting south lakes wild animal park, will be using my tesco vouchers for this.

Cost is an issue too as trying to hold onto the pennies, so will be lots of packed lunches etc, but would not mind a few suggestions of nice cheaper places to eat out for a treat while we are there.

Any info will be appreciated

The Lakes is a great place to go with children, although what floats a 16 year old's boat might not be OK for a 3 year old and vice versa...

National Trust is good for car parking for walks loads of lovely waterfalls, boat trips, Beatrix Potter etc etc...little gift shops, cosy cafes in abundance I love it. Get your NT book out and plot some great days out..Easter egg hunts and crafty events for kids in lots of them at Easter..

We usually spend Easter in the Lakes but having a change this year..

My 16 year old is past wanting to be entertained thank goodness :) She does'nt mind what we do, and joins in everything so very easy to please.

Am looking through my NT book, but it does not really say if suitable for younger ones, have been caught out like this before. I have my back carrier with her, which makes walks alot easier, but she loves to get out and about too.

Will keep searching? there is so much too I am getting confused :)

Fab place you will love it. Loads of NT places to visit. Are you a member of English heritage as lots to do near there too. Good value for family membership. Think you also get 15 months for price of 12. The zoo is fab we went there a few yrs ago. Have a fantastic break.;)

  • We always spend a day here, probably about 20mins from the caravan.

There is a huge wooden adventure playground there that my kids (16,14 and 12) love as do dh and I lol..... Thes also things aimed at the younger one.
My kids will spend all day there, we then drive home through bowness and get a bag of chips from the chippy next to the massive car park ( you can't miss it) and walk down to the lake with them to eat!
Finally a mooch round the shops up the huge hill and back to the caravan shattered lol
    Have fun x

    My 2ps worth

Uplands near Cartmel does and excellent carvery early doors for a family for only £20.00 for 2 adults and 2 children including a pudding.

The pheasent in allithwaite is a great pub for food as well not as cheap as uplands but excellent qualitiy

if you want to do some paid for attracitons and save on the kids you can pick up a days out discount card from Grange TIC or online, these cost 10.00 but get kids in free (with paying adults) to lots of south lakes attractions - wild animal park, lakeside & haverthwaite, motor museum lakes aquarium etc.. (money from it goes to the rescue team based next to lakeland caravan site)

holker hall is letting kids go free during the 2012 season.

free museums include the Dock Museum in Barrow - great adventure playground at Brockhole & grizedale (pay to park), Fell Foot Park is National Trust again just pay to park if not a member. Also in grizedale you have some great walks and bike trails - currently a sculpture trail in addtion to the ones that have been around for a while

There is plenty of walking, biking etc that can be done near the site, again info from the TIC in Grange

Best chippy is near Greenodd (Crakeside) great to do on the way back from the wild animal park.

National Trust wise Sizergh Castle near Kendal is good, Fell Foot is great, Allan Bank near Grasmere one of wordsworths houses is open this week for the first time in 200 years.

You also have Duckys Park farm next to the site and Lakeland Miniture village just down the road (quite noval only for a morning etc)

If you want to swim away from the site would suggest Park Leisure centre in Barrow.
