"dum spiro spero" - is that "while I breathe I hope"?

    Good motto if so!
Yes. I was a massive fan of "Spooks" and it was one of the tattoos Lucas (the wonderful Richard Armitage :blushing: ) had. I was intrigued and googled it's meaning, it seems to sum up so many things in life now.

I think I could do it for 5 days but I've got a well stocked kitchen and time to search out bargains so I could take advantage of cheaper deals and reduced items. And even if I didn't have the stocked kitchen and time to shop around I could probably still do it because it's only for 5 days, even something basic like baked potatoes, egg and chips, instant noodles and toast for 5 days isn't going to harm you.

It would be an entirely different situation if I was starting from scratch and I had to live on £1 a day for a long period of time, you couldn't just fill yourself with cheap stodge because it would have an impact on your health.

I think anyone could do £1 a day for 5 days but it would be a nightmare if that really was your life and you had to sustain it for longer.

    I agree totally.

I'm sure it wasn't the OP's intention but this thread got me thinking along those lines exactly. It's a very different thing to come up with a menu for £1 a day with a storecupboard and maybe several people but another thing if it's just one person being given just £1.

It got me thinking that (aside from the homeless) there are lots of people that don't manage as when they have a little money it 'burns a hole in the pocket'. I so admire those that come on the boards so eager to learn how to budget, plan, shop and cook. They're such useful skills, vital even.

Thankyou, op , I think I will try this.
As I am vegetarian I think I should be able to manage it. I think the main difficulty for me will be getting my '5 a day'

  • Hi, i had a look at this the other day, can't remember the exact costings now, but I was thinking of chilli - basically tinned rk beans, 19p, passata, 29p, an onion a carrot, spices, value rice 49p, enough for 2 dinners, beans on toast one night , curry with an onion, tin of butter beans 39p?, carrot and either spices from larder or value curry sauce - value rice as before, should do 2 dinners. Would probably go for soft cheese on wholemeal toast for lunches - approx £1.30 for loaf and soft cheese in Lidl - porridge, value teabags, 1 litre longlife milk, and a banana or two if possible.

Wouldn't get fat, would you? Nutrition not too bad but low on f and v. Winchelsea's idea for dried peas/sprouted peas would work well.
You could probably do better with whoopsies, but can't rely on these I guess. Just glad I don't have to think like this all the time.

I'm sure there are lots of MSE'ers who are particpating in the live below the line challenge (https://www.livebelowtheline.com/uk) in a couple of weeks time.
I hoped we could share ideas?

As I'm away from home on the 7th, and not able to cook my own food etc, I will be doing it from 8-12th May instead, so a day behind everyone else, but I'm sure nobody will mind that! I will also have a much more difficult time than most of you due to some allergies/severe food intolerances which limit what I can eat!

I am hoping that Aldi's super6 that week are things I can eat - this week was good, fresh pineapple, and apples are things I can eat and do a lot with - yummy!

Nobody trying this? I would have thought there would be some takers in the Mse world, even if just to prove it can be done! I have a few ideas, need a trip to Iceland and aldi this weekend to check prices there as they aren't online like tesco!
