This is my first post so be gentle, please.
I'm want to book tickets on a Virgin train and am given the option of forward or airline seats, what are the differences? If I book an airline seat, will I not sit next to my friend?

Front and back facing seats are in a 4 around a table.
Airline seats are 2 seats next to one another, but with no table, just the drop down leaf on the back of the chair in front.
If you book your tickets together you will usually be sat together, unless the train is very busy. It doesn't matter whether it is a front or airline seat, except that table seats usually get booked first, so if it is a busy train you have more chance of gettign 2 together if you pick airline. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
welcome to the board.
airline style seats are seats with no tables except the little pull down ones stored in the seatback in front of you.
if you ask for backward facing seats and book both tickets at same time then you will automatically be given a pair of seats together if they are available on the train.
I hope this helps.0 -

If you are tall legroom is not that good in the airline seats. If you travel at a quiet time you can always seat in any unreserved seat.0

Airline seats are in pairs and face either back or facing direction of travel. Howver, I do not recall that you can request which direction you face in airline seats. That only usually applies to the pairs each sides of the tables.0
