Remote desktop help - pocket pc

Can someone assist -

I have remote desktop enabled on my home pc and wish to control/access it remotly from my pocket pc which is running ms mobile 5.

I understand that this is possible with terminal client.

Home PC is set up correctly as far as i can tell to allow remote access. On my PDA i access the terminal client program - i am unsure what IP address to set as the server. How do i find this out?

Confussed 192.162.1.1 is local IP i guess. what is sub mask etc?
My pc in connected directly to the internet via a router. What/how can i find the server address required for me to enter into my PDA??

Thanks

  • You need to enter the IP address of your PC, sub mask will be 255.255.255.0, however I don't think you'll need to enter that in your VNC client. Good luck though, I've tried to get VNC running on my PDA before and didn't mange it!

Actually, are you trying to use VNC or SSH?
  • start, run, cmd

    ipconfig
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

I am still having problems. I tried the suggestions above but to no avail.

IPCONFIG only returns my local IPaddress eg 192.168 etc ..

I need to assign a server to my desktop pc and be able to access this remotly using my PDA. Terminal Client is asking for a server address.. what/where do i find this from? how do i assign this to my PC.

    Thanks

192.168.x.x is only your home router IP address, you will probably need to obtain a static IP address from your ISP (if you don't have it ask for one) and then set up the router to allow the pc to act as a server. This site will tell you what your actual IP address is http://www.labpixies.com/gadget_page.php?ID=36 but this might change next time you switch on the router.

An alternative to setting up your own remote access is to use an external service such as "Log Me In" see https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp - though not sure if it's suitable for a PDA. I once used their free package https://secure.logmein.com/go.asp?page=products_free and it was v easy to set up.
  • I think you're getting confused here, the IP address of your desktop is the server in this case. Am I right in thinking you're trying to connect to your desktop from your PDA with VNC? In this case you need to install a VNC server on your desktop, and a VNC client on your PDA.

If you're just trying to use ssh then I'm not sure if you can do this with Windows.

Ah, when you say remotely do you mean from outside your home network? In this case cledor is right, you'll need to set up port forwarding. Services like dyndns.org are useful for this, and you might not even need a static IP for your router - my linksys router automatically tells dyndns when it's IP changes. If you're trying to connect form within your home network then you just need your desktop IP.
  • The solution for you

To find your external IP address, go to https://www.whatismyip.com it will tell you what it is. dependant on your ISP you may have a static or a dynamic ip address dynamic means your ip address usually changes if you disconnect and reconnect, the best solution is to use static but you can get DNS forwarders like https://www.no-ip.com where you enter an address and it forwards that address to your IP address, your pc requires a small client installed to make this work and it is free.

Configure your router to either forward everything to your PC or be selective and only forward the ports required for your connection for better security. TS uses port 3389 as standard. You will also need to configure your firewall to allow connections for TS on that port.

Finally you need to configure a user account on the pc for remote access and set a password up for it also don’t just leave things unsecured.

Good luck it’s easy to do but using a pda to navigate a large screen isn’t the easiest of things to do.

There are alternatives, like synchronising your pda and pc documents email and setting your PDA to pick up your email account if you want that is how I us my pda.

Seaweasle, you no longer need a client to remote access a pc, terminal services and windows xp allow it, you just need to configure it right click my computer, properties and the remote tab it is all there for you.

Install remote control software (free) from https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp on the pc (or as my case pc's ) you wish to remotely access

You can then use any web browser to remote control your pc - I am remotely logged in from work at the moment on my works laptop. I use logmein on o2 xda mini s both via the internet and via my home wireless network.

This solution required no port forwarding, no dns forwarding ( i have a dynamic ip addy) etc for me - it is simply amatter of installing some software and away you go.
