Couple of questions - gumtree and noise (no relation to each other!)

Firstly, has anyone ever advertised in the wanted section of Gumtree for a property to rent and where you successful?
Secondly, how do you determine whether a property will be suitable noisewise? You will gather from my previous posts that noise is a big issue for me, and so far I've been looking at detached or semi-detached properties (where they are built with front doors next to each other). I know I'm limiting myself but I do not want to hear a peep from neighbours (this is something Im not going to debate, just accept it).
So what should I do if looking at properties to determine whether it is suitable from a noise POV? Obviously asking the landlord/agent will be pointless, and I'd feel a bit too cheeky asking the next door neighbour. Suggestions appreciated.
