Mackenzie Hall Demand

Afternoon All,
I'm a noob but have been reading what others have to say for a while now.
The reason for this post is, as the thread title suggests, regarding a demand from Mackenzie Hall that my wife received today. I've seen other threads re: MH but I've struggled to find clear advice.
the situation is this:
My wife receives a letter from Creation something or other saying that a debt has been transferred to someotheruch company. She also receives a letter, the same day, from MH saying that they are acting on behalf of someothersuch company and that she owes £340 odd. There are no other details of the debt.
She has been threatened with court action if she does not respond within 10 days. They also claim to have made numerous attempts to contact her (which is rubbish). I've already advised her not to call them.
She recalls an unresloved debt from around 1998 for a similar amount but does not want to admit liability for something that is a) an old debt b) possibly not even hers
Can anyone offer clear advice regarding how to proceed?
