Hi-Fi will read MP3 player via USB but not memory sticks.

Options
I've just bought a second hand Hitachi Hi-Fi, with USB socket and SD slot. The USB slot doesn't provide enough power to power a USB stick. It works fine with my MP3 player running off battery, but plug in a USB stick or portable HD - I'd assume the former would require less power - and it doesn't detect it. Is this normal for a hi-fi with USB socket? And if not, are there certain sticks that require less USB power to run?

And I do have both my MP3 player and USB stick formatted to FAT32

what hifi do you have? you should refer to your manual to see what it will accept though the usb socket!! some hi-fi's are really good and it will work with most formats, but some are quite limited even down to the name length of a folder etc....
    ewwwww what is that...

I know in my car, the USB stick has to be formatted a certain way - not just FAT32, but the 'allocation unit size' has to set at a certain size or it won't recognise it. (The option to change the unit size comes up in Windows when you try to format the usb drive). If you have the instructions, it's worth checking?
