How can I get my savings account in my name ?

When I was born my Grandad opened a savings account for me, which he paid money into each week. I'm now 19, my Grandad is 87 and suffers from Dementia and is unable to leave the house, so he can't really remember about the account, and is in no fit state to go to the bank. My Gran has no clue about banking or savings and doesn't know what to do either.

How could I gain access to my savings like my Grandad would want. We don't share the same surname, and I really havn't a clue how to access it, because I don't what would happen to it if he passes on, as he's doesnt have a final will and testiment either.

Thanks.

Which bank is the account held with?

How are the names described on the account? (e.g. Grandad in re Grandson or Grandad Tee Grandson etc)

Does the account actually have your name attached to it or is it solely in Grandads name? Find out which bank then go and ask .

19 years ago a man of your grandad's age would almost certainly have opened a passbook account with a bank, building society or the post office - so you need to look for a passbook.

Is there someone who has the power of attorney to look after your grandad's financial affairs? If not there should be and the family needs to take care of that first. That person is the only one who can release any funds your granddad owns. If this account is not in some form of trust with your name on it, any funds are part of your grandad's assets and estate. Even if you were to find a passbook in your grandad's name, you would not be entitled to the money unless you can prove your grandad's intentions to whoever hold the power of attorney.
