I don't think that would work...the Kobo app on the Playbook is very poor and hasn't been updated in ages. It doesn't seem to recognise any books not bought through Kobo itself.
I use Book Reader.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Can I download the app for book reader for free? Is it compatible via epub downloads through hotmail attachments?0

I use the kindle app on my playbook. You need to sideload it from android. There are loads of tutorials on how to do it online.0

Book Reader is £1 but it's really worth it for its level of customisation.. alas, I'm not sure whether it would work with hotmail attachments.
You can sideload Kindle, or there are other free ereaders on app world.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Whats the easiest way then to get epub files onto the playbook?0

The easiest way is to put them in the Playbooks document folder then just import them using an app like Book Reader...takes 10 seconds, it's what I do.
I have my books on the Playbook as a mirror image of what I have in Stanza for the iPod Touch. A 7" reader for the day (Playbook) and a 3.5" reader for night (iPod Touch)
There probably are free ereaders available, but not as good.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

You have to import files into Book Reader, so if you have any saved epubs - anywhere on your Playbook - it can import them.
I don't really get why you want to email epubs to yourself, but it should work.
Alternatively, with the Playbook's Print To Go, you can wirelessly print documents, pdfs, epubs etc. from your PC and they end up in the documents folder of the PlaybookI shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Right, I've played around with Gmail and the Playbook and I was able to send myself an email with an epub attachment from my netbook, open it in Gmail on the Playbook, save the epub and import it into Book Reader.. so it should work with Hotmail.
This is a very robust, active community for the Playbook: http://forums.crackberry.com/blackberry-playbook-f222/I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.
