Tank range vw polo 59 reg

Options
I have a 59 reg polo (the previous shape not new shape) and ge around 229 miles to a tank before the red light comes on. I'm currently looking at new polls and see that the tank range is 509 miles ( according to what car). Does this mean they have massively improved the fuel efficiency in the new model, it has a bigger tank, or my car isn't running efficiently? I'm very confused. If anyone can help?

What is your engine size? You drive around everywhere in 2nd gear? Lots of cold starts/short trips? I'm guessing its a diesel...

No idea what the tank size is, but even assuming just 40 litres thats 26mpg which is pretty low. When is it due its next service?

Thanks for replying it's a 1.2 match petrol I've just used a mpg calculator and it reckons I'm getting 27mpg
    Which is terrible.

I try to group my journeys, doing 5 miles or so at a time but i do do the shorter journeys on occasion. the journey to work is 10 miles each way with 5 on the motorway. I work 3 days a week.

It was serviced in sept, and has 11000 on the clock. I'm not the best economical driver but I didn't think it was that bad

5-10 miles are short journeys! Why on earth did you buy a diesel? 11k miles in 2.5 years? That's ridiculous! Wouldn't taxis be cheaper?

You are either a shocking driver or the car is malfunctioning. I favour the 2nd option. You will never achieve the claimed maximum range but circa 400miles per tank should be expected given your driving pattern. Economical driving is a matter of getting into the highest gear possible as quickly as poss without the car labouring. Does the car perform as you would expect during your journeys e.g. does it want to stall, over rev/race etc? If you have any of these symptons or similar then get the car to a garage and explain what you are experiencing and ask for a mechanic to come with you for a short drive so as they can listen. Of course if you are really a secret boy racer and dash around in low gears reving the ar** out of it then your low range will be true.

I hired a 2010 Polo a couple of years ago, drive it up to North Wales from East London and used up a quarter of a tank. I did over 500 miles before I had to fill it up.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I was a boy racer before I had my kids, having a zooped up mini cooper (original) and a Peugeot 106 ralley years ago however I do try and watch my driving now (or thought I did). I do think I could have an issue as -ve never had more than 300 to a tank when I've done 150 miles each way on the motorway.
Its under warranty still so off to the vw dealer I think on Monday
  • I can get 550 miles out of my tank in the current 1.4 TSI Golf , MPG over a 12 month period averages out at 47 per gallon mixed motoring , no motorways.

What version of the 1.2 do you have?

If it's the 55bhp version then there isn't a lot of power to push a heavy car around. I have a 1.25 fiesta and the mpg is around 37mpg on short journeys, rising to 50mpg on the motorway no matter how slowly I drive.

Sometimes a bigger engine is best.

  • The current 1.2 engine is a 3 cylinder job and not one of VW's better efforts.
