We have one buy us that has an added sign that says only turn on the arrow. Been there years, it is a proper purpose built sign and necessary given the location.

A tad confusing when you approach other "arrow controlled" sites though because you are always double thinking like the OP.

What shape and colour is the sign?

Red originally red writing on white with a red border, now somewhat faded/worn over the years.

Certainly not one out of the highway code more a local authority "advice" sign from the 60/70s:)

Then, I would imagine it is not enforceable.

    For OP.

You should (and luckily did) go on the main green light irrespective of whether the arrow is lit or not. You should move forward into the road check for traffic coming from your left and then go.

If it had been a "main road turning right into side road" junction you should move forward until opposite the right turn, check for oncoming traffic on the main road and then turn left.

I had one of these in Cardiff, Newport Road turning into City Road, lights turned green guy at the front did not move. I safely entered the lane to my left (straight on lane) drove past him moved right into the "waiting lane" for traffic turning right. There's room for about 5 cars to move forward past the green light and wait for oncoming cars to stop or for a gap to appear. I waited momentarily for a gap to appear and turned right, meanwhile Charlie Boy was still sitting waiting at the green light!

I know the junction you mean.

So much muppetry on that road on a daily basis, especially with the idiotic design of some of the retail park exits, and people not knowing which sections have bus lanes and which don't.

    Wrong...
You should move forward if safe and proceed with care. So long as you don't infringe anyone else's right of way you're good to go.
You'd fail a driving test for waiting at a green light unnecessarily.

I thought I had corrected my post.

Ok more info after relaying MX5huggys post (Thank you). The loop for the detector is usually after the stop line. The green arrow comes on by moving forward beyond the stop line onto the detector.

Probably not - but could there have been a pedestrian green light across just that bit of the road you wanted to use?

    From the highway code

    [Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 & 36]
    177

Green filter arrow. This indicates a filter lane only. Do not enter that lane unless you want to go in the direction of the arrow. You may proceed in the direction of the green arrow when it, or the full green light shows. Give other traffic, especially cyclists, time and room to move into the correct lane.

At a junction local to me the green filter lane arrow lights as the full green changes to red. This allows pedestrians to cross the main road while allowing cars to turn right.
