Hi
Was in the Shell garage last night to fill up the motor, put my card in the machine, then the attendant took it out and told me he has to keep it??????
Never heard of this b/4 and got a bit upset about it (naturally)
He would'nt tell me why he has to keep it. but b/4 I left I told him to cut it up which he did, but only in half.
Does anyone know of this happening and why it is so please?

If i was you i would get in touch with your credit card provider ASAP to see what's going on.0

Thanks for getting back so soon, I did ring b/4 posting, but there are quite a few numbers to call and I obviously rang the wrong one :embarasse
Anyway, managed to get through this time and it's all sorted.:)0 -
It's called a decline and pick up by card issuers. It's when they want the card back for whatever reason.0

To be honest I never let staff touch my card, but this is as Meer said they're told to retain the card (which is rather rare). Either way your card has been cancelled and for some reason the issuer wants it back.0

Do card issuers still ask merchants to do this? I remember this from manual charge form days but thought it was a thing of the past.0
-
Yes they do and they still pay out £50.
Years ago, they also used to ask the retailer to call the Police if there was fraud involved and keep the person on the premises if safe to do so !0 -
OK but it must be a lot more difficult for them to comply. In the past, the authorisation call was not normally made in the immediate hearing of the customer and the card would already be somewhere out of the customers reach. But with a chip/PIN terminal ... . Does the instruction to retain the card come up on the chip/PIN terminal screen? The majority of customers would probably remove their card and refuse to hand it over.0

It was years ago. Probably 20 or more.
Would imagine there is a code issued on the chip and PIN machine, it used to be called a Code 10 referral. These days, i can't imagine they do decline and pick ups anymore as the customer has possession of the card now as you say.0 -
I've seen before where it comes up on the screen "Hand card reader to merchant" and then when they press OK it comes up with further instructions. So you wouldn't know its been declined until you already handed your card over.
Of course, this wouldn't work if the card reader is fixed to the checkout.0
