I had to decline 3 xmas 'dos' due to debt and we had to make up a fresh excuse for each -
1 - Sorry my son has his school xmas play that night (partially true - it was an afternoon performance not an evening one)
2- Sorry I can't sit that long and definately can't dance at the moment, I did my back in flushing the toilet in McDonalds (this was TRUE)
3- Sorry we can't go, I've got to work that evening (false)

I work irregular shifts so can usually get out of anything as noone knows when I am working:o

I always went for 'I can't afford to buy rounds' but always bought my own.

If a good friend really wants to get you a drink, order non-alcoholic/half a pint/spirit + splash, not double plus red bull or similar!

Again I'm lucky in that a lot of my friends have had debt/ periods of unemployment etc and were sympathetic.

I sortof feel 'coming out' as a debtor to some people is part of becoming debt-free (for life). You remove the elements of secrecy and denial that are often part of how you get into debt in the first place.

Agree with Plum Pie - a few of my closer friends know so I either won't go or I'll go and not spend much.

However, I do tend to rely on the children for excuses- oh I can't come, so sorry, it's OH's work do and I have to babysit/sorry DD's ill. Also I go to my mum's quite a lot so that's a handy excuse.

I've also (and am not very proud of myself for this) made up big family events to avoid really expensive things - like big 60th birthday bash for mum-in-law to get out of a hen night I just couldn't afford. No other way around it- she wouldn't have understood had I explained. Didn't make me feel any better though!

Arrive a bit late so know that everyone has a drink so go straight to the bar and buy my drink and sit down.

Then when the next round comes around decline and then get my own drink on the way back from the ladies.

Works every time apart from when I am out with Dad for some reason.

    Yours

  • Mine's is usually that the OH's going out so no babysitter, most friends have given up asking by now which makes me sad but nights in are cheaper.

Just be honest and say you can't afford it right now, no need to give reasons, it's not really anybody's business unless you choose to tell them. Opt out of the round and get your own drinks.
  • I choose to be really honest and just say "Sorry, I've got limited cash so I'll buy my own as I can't get a round in" and then if anyone says "Oh I'll buy you a drink anyway" I generally insist that they don't.

That way, no-one can ever say you're a sponger or a tightwad....just honest!
