:mad:Recently bought a mattress from Argos after seeing their advert for upto 50% off silentnight mattresses. Pretty sure it showed a pre discount price of £550 (not a RRP), and an after discount price of £294. Had reason to look at website after purchase and the mattress reference was no longer valid but the same mattress was now under a different reference with a non discounted price of £329. Rang Argos they said they don't have records of the advertised price for the date I purchased but confirmed the mattress had only ever been sold at £294 to £299. Felt cheated because I though I was getting a higher priced mattress and this was the reason for purchase. As mattress had been opened Argos refused to take my complaint further. They did, when pressed, acknowledge it was possible an incorrect pre discount price had been shown but they couldnt confirm this. Said I'd go to trading standards and they said Ok. Feel totally ripped off.

As long as they did sell it for a period of time at a higher price, as far as I know they can do that.
It's possible the mattress was stock they were clearing, just because the one they have at £329 looks similar doesn't mean it's the same. What makes you think it is?0 -
Hi, they confirmed that they had never sold it a price higher than £299 and wouldn't/couldn't confirm that they had shown it at £550. Moral of this story is if you ever take up an offer, print the relevant literature to use at a later date.0

Sorry sent before I finished - the mattress was Silentnight so they are very clear in their naming of a product, e.g. Hendon Cushion top, the description of was exactly the same. Thanks0

Just goes to show that 99% of ALL sales are just marketing. Just because a company had advertised a product at the higher price it doesn't mean that's what it is worth. If you buy something for £299 then it's worth £299.
Look at all the supermarket adverts on telly at the moment, Higher price was charged for about a week usually if you look at the dates.
Sales are just to give us all an excuse to buy, how many times have you bought something just because it was "In The Sale"
As far as I can see Argos haven't done much wrong. Apart from get their marketing in a pickle with this product.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
Watchdog the other week showed how blatantly the supermarkets abuse these rules regarding "reductions" and "sales". In fact the supermarkets were in breach of the current legislation which is wide enough to drive a profit through as it is. Sometimes the higher price was only for one random day lol.
I would definately report them to trading standards as these big companies need to learn they need to stop abusing the law in this way.
As consumers we need to understand what a con all these so called offers are. Shop around, weigh up the price and decide is the product concerned worth that amount to you and do you need it/can afford it. If the answer is yes its a bargain, if not walk away.

If you want to see if you are getting the best price for something, you need to look around at other retailers, not just rely on the person selling you it telling you that it is a good deal. Groupon are the worst for this obviously - look up any of their deals for Electric Blankets, LED lights etc. at 75% off, and it will normally be cheaper on Amazon for a start.
Argos are obviously being naughty in this case. But you got the item you were expecting, and you paid the price you expected to pay, so you haven't been ripped off. You've just got Deal Or No Deal syndrome - worrying about what you could have won (paid) after the event.0 -

But they have no proof that they did have it up for a higher price though so what will trading standards do?"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

"Pretty sure"........ isn't quite the same as I have evidence that proves that fact 100%
The whole thing sounds a little like buyers remorse and someone trying to justify their purchase.
But I also agree that the system of sales needs to be looked at as THEY ARE A CON.
Lets do away with all the offers, ie buy one get one free, or buy lamb chops get mint sauce free. Lets stick to one price on a product and only one price. Never showing RRP, Was or an the worse After Event Price.
Online retailers are just if not worse then the shops.
Saw something along the lines of £199 should be £249 the other day, what does that mean?
Rant over, I hate Sales!!!!Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -

I disagree, surely the moral of this story is to notice the price actually paid and ignore all "offers".Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorn is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that she is pink; we logically know that she is invisible because we can't see her."0 -
I think Currys do this with laptops!Just about to give up!0
