Possible DHL Delivery Theft - What to do!

Options
Hi all,

newbie here and need advise on a serious issue

An item which I ordered from a private seller was sent with DHL Express on Thursday. I have been eagerly waiting for the item and have been tracking it from the initial pickup.

Yesterday morning the tracking status showed the item was with the delivery courier (9am) so was hoping to get the item well before 5pm as its on the road.

I have waited ALL DAY and still no sign of the item. I called DHL at 5.30pm to know whats going on as the status showed its still with delivery courier. The agent on the phone said they will call the driver to know what happened.

The driver said the item was delivered to my next door neighbor as no one was home, which is shocking to believe as my whole family was in. Then after 10 mins or so (5.54pm) the tracking updates to say it was signed by LEWIS from Number 27 (my neighbour) - there is no one called lewis from number 27! There's an old bulgarian lady who lives there who was not even in during the day! Surely the tracking updates the moment the item is signed for???

I knocked and knocked and no one opened the door (expected as no one is home). Neighbours arrived home at around 7pm and said they got no parcel.

This ALL sounds soo fishy to me! First of all, the item was on road from 9am and it took until 6pm for the so called delivery? I was home at the time of the so called delivery and saw no DHL vans anywhere or any knock on the door! And suddenyl I get notification saying it was delivered and signed by a name called lewis from number 27 after the DHL agent calls the driver to see what happened.

I made another call to DHL to say neighbours dont have the parcel. DHL dont work weekends so said they will call the depot on monday and try and see what happened by speaking with the driver etc.

Can someone shed some advise on how I should go about with this? I am really stressed as it was a very expensive item. Will I get my money back? :(((

Ultimately, you contracted with the seller to get the goods to you.
It is the seller's responsibility to ensure this happens (assuming they arranged the delivery).

At this stage, without knowing anything further I would say that at present the item (by DHL's admission) has been delivered to somewhere other than to you. I would be inclined to pass that information back to the seller and to inform them that DHL are presently investigating.

You have little choice but to wait for the result of DHL's inquiries but ultimately unless you paid for courier directly yourself I would let the seller sort this out (as the courier's responsibilities are with the person who paid for their services). Unless you have agreed otherwise I would say that to have the item delivered to you is a reasonable expectation of the agreed contract between you and therefore whilst delivery somewhere else may be convenient it is not what was agreed.

See what they say on Monday & take it from there.

Advise the sender of the item ASAP. They are responsible for getting the item to you and DHL are responsible to them

I have told the sender to call DHL on monday as well. I'll let you all know what DHL come back with.
  • Would it be worth doing a quick search to see if there is a "Lewis" living at a number 27 with a short distance of your house and if there is, maybe give them a call.

    You can do it here:

providing that they are not ex-directory and have a phone.

I agree that it's not your responsibility to do this, but if may help you get your goods quicker.

Is your address similar to another in your area? For example, taylor court is yours and taylor cresent or taylor place is the other?

Get them to ask the driver to describe anything he can remember about both your doors and your neighbours (or even physical description of the neighbour who signed for it).

If nothing else it will prove the item was never delivered to you or your neighbour (for example they say white pvc door, black iron gate, garden gnomes and yours is a wooden gate and red door with no ornaments - it will show its their mistake).

nope, my road is not similar to any other road in london let alone my area.

another thing, i didnt even get a note through my door to say the package was left elsewhere. anyhows i will see what happens on monday. i will deffo ask them to ask driver to describe how "lewis" looked like etc. the problem is, my next door neighbours run a business and they were not home until late so its just really bizarre to see the driver saying they left it with them.

monday is going to be interesting!! will keep ya all posted.

It is entirely possible that the parcel has been delivered to completely the wrong address and will be identified as such on Monday.

Just because the parcel is on the van at nine o'clock in the morning, does not mean it will get delivered to you before six o'clock. The driver might have a hundred jobs to do before he gets to you.

I had a similar incident where I was waiting in all day for a parcel to be collected (from my house in Cheshire). I called them when they never showed and they said nobody had been in. I insisted I had been. They looked into it, came back to me saying that the driver had knocked and rung but got no answer so he'd left a card. I had not received a card. They said they'd look into it and it turned out they'd gone to the address of the person I was sending it to (in Leicester) and had left the card with her, though she was away until the next day.
It all got sorted but sometimes stupid things like this happen. Hopefully they'll sort it Monday but it's really up to the seller to sort, you can just make sure you give them as much information as you can. If you've notified them promptly hopefully they can get to the bottom of it quickly
