Revitalising "brass effect" front door handle

I've searched t'internet to no avail, so thought I'd tap into the collective knowledge of moneysavers to see if you can help me out. The front door handle on our house is looking very tired and weathered, but I just know it'll be a nightmare to change because (a) I'm rubbish at DIY and (b) the front door has supposedly got a thin steel skin either side (according to our housebuilders, 8 yrs ago) so drilling new holes will be a problem.
So, does anyone know of a product I can brush/rub onto the door handle (and plate) to restore at least a modicum of shinyness? I appreciate it'll probably cost as much as new door handles, but I'm sure I can recoup any investment by offering to refurbish our neighbours' doors as well!
Cheers all!

Kim and Aggie did a cleaning thing on a womans brass effect lamps ( she let all of her budgies fly freely around the sitting room!!!!!) so you can imagine the mess, let alone the stench:eek: . Any way Kim cleaned this lamp with Worcershire sauce than rinced after wards. I have not tried this myself as there ain't no brass in this house, metal or money. I'd try it on a little spot first and see if that works.0

What has happened to your door fittings is that the final lacquer coat has worn off then the 'brass' has tarnished.
I would take off all the old lacquer with some very fine wire wool then
get some Brasso or whatever and polish it up until is shines again then apply a couple of coats of clear lacquer.
Should last for a few years if you give it a couple of coats.

Hmm, I'll try those ideas - the handle can't look much worse, it's pitted where it's worn, so we'll have to do something.
Thanks!
PS As an honorary Sheffielder I'm duty bound to use Henderson's Relish rather than Worcestershire Sauce...0
